Tobaccos for the Newbie to Avoid Tongue Bite?

For a lot of new pipe smokers, tongue bite isn't necessarily the issue but tongue burn is. Honestly, since I learned to smoke a pipe without puffing too hard, packing to tight, and relighting every two minutes, I don't know that I have ever experienced much tongue bite. Also, I've found that...

Freshly opened virginias - not so good

Many tobacco tins are vacuum sealed, preventing air from coaxing along those chemical processes which make a blend taste like it should. That is why I prefer to smoke bulk blends. I find that their quality is more consistent. Also, C&D and GL Pease do not vacuum seal their tins to allow air...

    Getting used to English Tobacco

I fell in love with Latakia very early on in my pipe smoking experience. I think the main reason was that it finally produced the flavorful full bodied smoke that I wanted (the aromatics were not!). That being said, it is a different taste and one that may take some time to get used to. Believe...

    Prairie Home Companion?

I grew up in a Lutheran household, so you better believe I'm a Garrison Keillor fan. Lake Wobegon is a fantastic book. I love his wholesome, Midwestern sense of humor. When I listen to the show I feel like I am escaping to a simpler world where things move just a little bit slower and man is...

    The beginning of the end?

I'm going to have to say that I don't think that FDA regulation will necessarily end pipe smoking as we know it. I think that it is important not to get into the sky is falling routine. I don't want some of the forum readers that maybe smoke their pipes once a day or less (like me) thinking that...

    Ghosting

Personally, I haven't had too many issues with ghosting in pipes although there have been a couple of times that I made sure to clean out the pipe with some rum afterward to prevent it from happening. If you are worried, break it in with a Virginia or Burley and you won't have to worry.

    Straight pipe or Curved pipe?

I have owned a number of straight and bent pipes. However, these days I prefer straight. Honestly, I just like how they look. I don't think any pipe looks better and more handsome while I smoke it than a straight rusticated pipe.

Go Twins! I love listening to games on the radio.

    Frustrated

I think that due to the wide array of flavors available in pipe tobacco, very few of today's pipe smokers pick just one or two blends. It is kind of like fine food, you like to explore different flavors. This is part of the joy of smoking tobaccos. I like a lot of blends and cannot imagine just...

What's the Word About Aldo Velani Pipes?

I own an Aldo Velani Starter and it is a phenomenal pipe. I highly recommend their products.

    Best low-end briar?

HIS makes a great pipe for under $30. I have had three of them during my pipe smoking career and they smoke extremely well.

    Everything Tastes The Same

Just throwing it out there, but if you are a person who enjoys a fine drink and has a decent palate for it, aromatics may not be your bag. I was once told by an experienced pipe man that "Tobacco is like liquor, a drinker evolves from Vodka to Bourbons to Gins to Scotch. Smokers evolve from...

    Nicotine hit...

Peterson's Irish Flake, Gawith and Hoggarth's Dark Flake Unscented as well as their ropes pack a real punch. It is hard to suggest tobaccos that give a big nicotine hit because every person is different. I cannot even smoke these blends, they make me a bit queasy. However, I believe luxury twist...

Alcohol Cleaning: Salt Vs. Cotton Ball

I've done us the cotton ball treatment a couple of times. I found it didn't really do any better job than evening out the cake and thoroughly cleaning the pipe with rum and pipe cleaners. Of course, I have never purchased an estate pipe that was truly sour either.

What Are You Smoking? April 2012

Waiting for a couple of flakes of 5 year old Penzance to dry a bit before I smoke them in my Cassano Mare Canadian to celebrate my birthday (birthday was yesterday but was too busy enjoying the wonderful party my wife through for me).
