    The End Is Nigh

I had never planned to retire (mostly because I loved my job), even though my wife started bugging me about it after she retired in 2000 with an early-out opportunity. Then, in 2005, we lost two good friends (separately), in their early 60's. At the service for the second, I decided I did not...

Still Have Your First Pipe? Why or Why Not?

Still have my first pipe, a Kaywoodie 500, purchased new in Oct. 1963. Well used, have replaced the bit 4 times. Obviously the stinger is long gone. Still smokes great. Wish I could say all of that about some others I have lost over those 55 years.

    C&D Haunted Bookshop

I did, and did not care for it, either. Both seemed to have too much perique for me. I do enjoy GL Pease's Barbary Coast, which seems to have the same ingredients, but in, apparently, a different mix.

    C&D Haunted Bookshop

I didn't care for it. I think it was the Perique. Too much for my tastes. Was so disappointed because I had heard so much about it and I generally like burley blends.

Music: Can You Sing, Play An Instrument Etc.? Show Us!

I have an arrangement with the local fire dept.: I only sing if necessary to clear a room! As to playing an instrument, I am great with the stereo! In other words, I have NO musical talent! Now, dancing, that's another story...used to teach ballroom dance back when people actually did that...

Off topic 50th High School Reunion

I was fortunate enough to have enjoyed high school, at least the social part. I wasn’t a jock, one of the straight A kids, or the popular ones. Our class had about 265 members, and had a reunion every 5 years after the 10th, until what should have been the 45th. The gal who always headed them...

    Hats!

Even free I cannot afford you. My cellar and liquor cabinets would quickly be emptied, my pipes missing, and the safe emptied! Then there would be my empty hat racks.....

    Another Retread - All IN

Welcome to the Forum and (back) to the joys of piping! Glad you received some Scotch for your big day. Hope the tradition continues. For MANY years, my wife gave me a nice bottle of fine scotch or cognac for my BD, things I would never have bought for myself. Still have some partial bottles...

    Hats!

Getting a hat to fit you usually requires a little effort. First thing to determine is your general head shape. There are round, oval, and long oval. Simply measuring your head with a tape may give you an idea of size, but will not guarantee fit., especially since many of the hats on the...

VW Bug Discontinued ... For Now

Yup, had that same book, Cosmic. Had a '73 Super Beetle & was a great car! Lost it in a divorce.... Had a '69 Beetle with reversed chrome rim extra wide rear wheels & narrow rim fronts. It sat outside during the winter and I had to put place mats on the front windshields to keep the frost off...

    Hats!

HATS??!! Did someone say, "Hats"? My Fedora & Bowler style hats. My "flat" caps. Some of my cowboy hats. More cowboy hats. And a couple specialty. This does not include the 80 or so ball caps. When you don't have hair, you have hats!

Moving From Windows Vista To Windows 10.....Any Surprises In Store?

I don't care for W10, prefer W7. I found W10 to have too many intrusions into my computer, such as allowing Microsoft to turn on camera and/or microphone without my knowledge. Also allows them access to my contacts, emails, and (I think) documents. Some of those authorities are granted in the...

Goodnight Mrs Calabash whenever you are!

Loved "The Schnoz"! And your Calabash, fishnbanjo! Thanks for the memory (with apologies to Bob Hope)!

Two bowls in and I’m a believer!!

Not sure exactly what you are seeking. Are you wanting a tobacco without any casing or top dressing? As I understand it, most burley or Virginia blends have been cased to improve the flavor of the tobacco and reduce some of the negative characteristics. Since most blends with which I am...

Two bowls in and I’m a believer!!

I agree with mso489's advice: don't get too carried away with a given blend until you have tried many. I'm sure you will find that your tastes change as your experience broadens. Personally, I never cared for aromatics, nor VA/Per's for that matter. I started with burleys and moved into...

    Forever Stems Vulcanite vs Lucite

I do not care for Vulcanite because they are a bit of a bother and I detest the sulfur taste if not properly cleaned. Most of my pipes that came with them now sport acrylic. I am admittedly one who enjoys the smoking, not the ritual cleaning, but, then, I am a codger.

    GL Pease Blends Sale

For those who like GL Pease's blends, Smoking Pipes is having a sale on his blends. Had to break my own promise not to buy any more for a while...

Deleted Account With 28353 Reviews On TR.Com

"Deleted" doesn't necessarily mean "banned". If people deactivate or delete their account on any given site, very often their posts, if they do not disappear with them (ala Facebook), are automatically converted to a generic, such as "Deleted". As already mentioned, if an account is inactive...

Should a Non Smoker Take up the Hobby?

The question of whether you should take up the pipe is a personal one which only you can answer. As to a starting tobacco, I recommend you start with something rather mild. In my mind, Carter Hall is a great choice for a beginner. It is rather mild, doesn't have a high nicotine content, will...

    SPC Plum Pudding

@jmsmitty6, I'll have to give that a try. As you can tell, Greg's blends constitute a large part of my preferences.
