Club Sandwiches - A Brief Dissertation

I enjoy a good club sandwich. That's typically what I'll order if it's on the menu at any restaurant or pub I've never been to before. I've found the quality of the club sandwich to be a pretty good indicator of overall food quality. I also usually order a club whenever we play a gig, because I...

Straight Stem on a Carved Meer

I recently acquired this estate meer as part of an auction lot, and it's in great shape, but the straight stem on it seems odd to me. I'm used to seeing at least slightly bent stems on meers like this, and this one with a straight stem just looks weird. I'm sure it's smokable, but I don't really...

Brown sugar, bourbon, pecan glazed salmon

Cooked this up for dinner last night. Wild caught (by me) coho salmon, seared in cast iron and then finished in the oven with a brown sugar, bourbon (Ezra Brooks), and pecan glaze. Some mixed vegetables and wild rice (courtesy of my Uncle Ben) were the sides.

    A Medico Tar Pit

One of the estate pipes I recently acquired, a Medico, has a gummy tar buildup the likes of which I haven't encountered before. I first noticed it when I cleaned out the stem and the shank, with the cotton swabs and pipe cleaners coming out with a sticky, gooey mess of black tar. It took a while...

    Most Expensive Pipe Smoking Accessory

I know that some have constructed whole smoking rooms for their pipe smoking endeavors, so my recently acquired accessory is small potatoes in comparison, but I thought I'd share anyway. I've taken to smoking on the front porch, and while I enjoyed the trailer park aspect of sitting out there...

    Restoring a filthy Kaywoodie Standard

I received a well used Kaywoodie as part of a lot that I won on eBay. Most of the other pipes were pretty easy to get cleaned up and back to smoking condition, but this one was a mess. The bowl was so caked that I could see no way of actually getting any tobacco in there, certainly not enough...

    Greetings from the Oregon coast

I've been lurking here for about a month. New to pipes but I'm very enthusiastic and committed already, as I've always been keen on pipes and the time is right for me to indulge. I'm retired from a career in IT (software development and QA). In my retirement I'm a drummer in a classic rock band...
