    Alas, Babylon

I almost forgot to mention another big angle I was surprised with in the story (won't give the story away): the Syrian port of Latakia. I think Pat Frank may have been a pipe smoker...

    Alas, Babylon

Hello all. Recently reading Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank and ran across this passage: I thought this passage was layers deep in context to the story but also struck me personally. I was pleased and surprised to find mention of pipe smoking (though perhaps not, the book was written in the 50s)...

What Are You Smoking? Happy New Year 2012! II

hnryclay - that picture reminds me of perhaps the greatest short story ever written: The Cask of Amontillado. It was the last of this tin of Dunhill Early Morning Pipe in the B-C Corsar tonight.

    Rosslare Classic vs. Royal Irish

I've had my eye on the Rosslare(s) line for a long time. This one may not have run you as much scratch... it's not a rhodesian(nor a Royal Irish) - but it sure looks good. Too much bread for me though.

What Are You Smoking? Happy New Year 2012! II

What Did Everyone Get For Christmas?!?

Wow oldmitch - the skull meers are incredible. Do you need me to send some Edgar Allan Poe to properly accompany?

Does heavier briar denote... higher quality?

No, I don't think that. I simply think that weight alone is an imperfect measure of density. I try my hardest not to assume what others are thinking as it's difficult for me to know. You will also have to excuse me for my obliviousness to the obviously negligible, the safely ignored, and...

Does heavier briar denote... higher quality?

If you held two pipes in your hands and they were the exact same weight - would they also share the exact same density or porosity? Weight is a measure of gravity's effect... hard to ignore it. Weight is still an imperfect measure for density and you explain why right here: mass/volume. Mass...

Does heavier briar denote... higher quality?

Weight alone is not a perfect measure of porosity or density. Diffusion would indicate porosity and something like specific gravity would probably be a better measure for density. I would suggest that weight is not a sure-fire way to determine if your pipe is more porous or less dense relative...

    1 year today

I don't know the exact day anymore but it was some time in December of 2001 that I quit. I guess that makes it 10 years now. Well done lukester - I wish you continued success!

December 2011 - What Are You Smoking?

After struggling mightily against sickness wherein I had the most awful throat, ear, and nose infections I was able to finally enjoy a pipeful last night for the first time since early/mid November. I've been feeling better for many days but my throat and tongue were so wrecked that nothing...

    Obama appeal on cig's

I think goldtooth waves a bit of a false flag on this one. The argument made for individual freedom in terms of taxation and state regulation of tobacco products applies to the same elements mentioned as the apparent real ills of our society. Big tobacco as a scapegoat for the ills of all...
