    Brigham Acorn clean up

This Brigham 2 dot was dirty and tired looking. The stem was in very good shape. More on the stem later. After reaming there a number of heat fissures. I applied a thin layer of JB weld, then some maple syrup, and powdered carbon. The stem is a question. You’ll notice the two dots are very...

    Stanwell 51 Vario refurb

I knew the issues, but for $40 a good deal. Very dirty pipe, a chipped stem, heat cracks and fissures in the bowl. I tried something new. I wanted the ovals on each side of the bowl to stand out. Rather than staining the entire pipe, I used a q-tip to paint light brown dye around the ovals...

Problem with CA glue and carbon

For those of us well versed in the restoration of stem holes, bite marks, and chipped vulcanite stems. Standard practice is to mix ca glue with powdered carbon for these repairs. The problem I continually have is how fast this mixture sets, setting so fast that one hardly has any time to get it...

    Whatever Happened to Troost Tobacco?

Long ago I used to smoke this by the pouch. Had a distinct toasty flavour. I rather liked it. I wonder who the manufacturer is now and if it’s now a different name.

    Those Silver "Tinfoil" Bags

Title edited for caps. Rule 9. Pretty sure you mean Mylar. Can get from Amazon. - jpmcw. I’m usually throwing baccy from a jar into a plastic bag. And as usual I end up with too many plastic bags and the baccy dries out. Id like to source some of those silver bags with a good zip lock to...

    Question about Febings dye

I use Febings a lot for dyeing my refurbs. I have a question about setting the stain. I don’t understand why we set the stain by flaming the wet stain. Flaming doesn’t set the stain for me. In fact nothing seems to actually set the stain. I can usually set a stain by adding a bit of mineral oil...

    Sources of Pipes for Restoration?

Usually I scan fleabay for pipes to restore. I’m living in a small City in SK Canada and I’m sure I’m the only guy who smokes a pipe. We don’t have any sources in our province. Yard sales and such. I can buy a bag of pipes, but usually all off brands. I like Stanwells, and Brighams. On the bay...

    Tobaccoreviews Site Down

I just noticed this. It looks like it’s be down for at least a day and a half which has been a little long for general maintenance. Sure hope it’s nothing serious. I use the reviews often. Usually I can log in, but can’t even do that. Somethings up. -Bill

    Draft Hole Too Large

I’ve got a decent piece of briar that I fashioned into a nice bowl. The daft hole was already cut. It’s extremely large, just a shade below 1/4 inch. Any idea how I can reduce the size of the hole on the pipe Thanks everyone, Bill

    C&D Burley #1 thru #5

I’d like to try some of these but #1-3 sound almost alike, #4 has some Latakia, and #5 is ?? has anyone tried all of them, some of them? Many thanks, -Bill

Making a Blah Blend more Interesting

I’ve posted this before but I thought I’d get a couple more ideas. I have two rather uninteresting vaper. To make them more interesting or tasteful, one suggestion would be BCA from Lane. Maybe one could add more red Virginia or something. The two blends just are very monochromatic and...

    Replacement for blending perique

Hello all. my regular supplier is out of blending perique and has been for a long time. I’m wondering if I could use something like Five Brothers to blend with a nice red Virginia. Thanks Everyone, - Bill

    Efficient sanding ideas

I’ve got a couple of chunks briar I’m reworking. These pipes have to go on a diet. The original designs you can view. I’ve trimmed the tops of a couple and I’m working towards a couple of chimneys. BUT, I’ve got to remove briar. I did many of the initial cuts with a dremel, but the sanding is...

    A Virginia to replace 5100

We all miss McClelland 5100. I used to mix up a batch of 5100 with some perique and it was great. Im looking for a good bulk replacement, and rather unsure of what to look for. Will any good red Virginia do, or should it be some special virginia mixture. Thanks all, -Bill

    I’m Latakia’d out!

My search for a sweet Latakia blend lent itself to a little burn out on Latakia. I’ve got three mixes from a vendor, and got to Sextant by GL Pease. I did like it. Perhaps a little heavy. Maybe Spring and Summer doesn’t lend itself to a heavy Latakia. I think I’m more of a Vapor man. I need a...

    Obstinate Ghost in the house.

I have posted the refurb of a Meer lined Grabow previously here A Meer-lined Grabow. What to Do? :: Pipe Repair and Maintenance - https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/a-meer-lined-grabow-what-to-do.94312/#post-36690670 reviewing I replaced the Meer lining with a mixture of plaster...

    Twin Bore Stems

Another one of my silly questions. Twin Bore Stems. I picked up a tenon turner the other day and received a number of free stems in the package. All were twin bore stems. I gather they are freebies to practice on, but I think a few are usable. But I’m not sure if a piper can actually clean...

    Sorry Dunhill, I don’t get you…

Whether new or old, refurbed or not this brand is overpriced. Period. But I dont understand why? Construction? Finish ? The so called oil treatment? I just don’t get it. Sure I’d like to own one but new or old, way, way too expensive for my taste. I respect those who smoke them. Not bashing...

    Benefits of cheap refurbs

I’m continually surprised at how well a cheaper refurbed clean pipe will smoke. I’ve been working on Grabows, Kaywoodies, yellow bowls, and no name pipes and after a good cleaning and maintenance these pipes smoke very well. Very well indeed. I wonder if this is a function of simply cleaning the...
