    My Ongoing Penzance Project

From Wikipedia: "Lloyd Cole (born 31 January 1961) is an English singer and songwriter, known for his role as lead singer of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions from 1984 to 1989, and for his subsequent solo work." How cool, to have you on this forum sir! I shall be sure to check out your music!

    Dizzy Pipe Prices

At the high end, the pipe market seems to function like an art market. Given the prices and depreciation that comes from even limited use, these are collected rather than smoked for the most part. My understanding is that those prices were established when the Chinese entered the market several...

Do Estate Pipe Crimp the New Pipe Market?

At the high end, I beg to differ. I own several pipes that I smoke, and several that are simply too fine to smoke (for me anyway). The reason I have 'extra' pipes is because I love them (as a collector), and I know that I will get much of my money back when its time to sell them on the estate...

    Jess Chonowitsch

It’s too bad that the main source of heat in this thread has decided to resign from the board. As a newcomer, I welcome strong opinions, if it stimulates a lively discussion. That said, I do agree with ron123, that participants who emphasize collecting over smoking can be subject to some...

    Jess Chonowitsch

I’ve not smoked one, but I’ve handled several of Jess’ more recent pipes, both traditional and freehand. Aesthetically they are beyond any criticism. Absolutely gorgeous. I’m sure they smoke just as well. To the naysayers, I would say that the experience of owning a perfect pipe from a living...

Best and worst regions or climates for enjoying a pipe

That's reassuring, thank you for your opinions. Thinking about it some more, I imagine that someone coming from Seattle might find smoking in Tucson unpleasant, and vice-versa. One thing I never have to deal with in Tucson is excess moisture. BTW, that well-respected and famous youtube pipe...

Best and worst regions or climates for enjoying a pipe

A well known and respected youtube pipe celebrity recently remarked that he switched to smoking cigars while in Mexico, as the climate was not favorable for pipe smoking. I live in Arizona, and I have only smoked pipes in Arizona. I seem to enjoy it about the same, regardless of the season. I’d...

    Bowl musings

Its commonly said that a bowl with a thick wall will smoke cooler, but I wonder if that's always the case. It will certainly feel cooler to the touch. But to some extent the thick wall will act like an insulator. Most of my bowls are small to medium, with walls that are proportional. I notice...

    How to live longer...

I look forward to the day when I am old and wise enough to add something of value to a thread like this.

    Ivorite

Hans Former Nielsen makes some of most amazing pipes I have ever seen, and I notice he uses quite a bit of it (check out SmokingPipes). I just thought it curious that an ivory look-alike would be used that high level of pipemaking.

    Ivorite

I notice it being used on some very nice pipes as a decorative accent. What is it, some sort of plastic? Is it stable and safe, or does heat degrade it to any extent? Do you think it belongs on high end pipes?

First Time Using a Safety Razor

I've used double-edge cartridges (mostly Gilette Sensor) for decades. A few years ago I jumped into the whole safety razor thing. I've used Merkur and Feather razors, and a whole bunch of creams and soaps. My conclusion is that a safety razor cannot do the job as well as a good double-edge...
