I'm here a few times a week. Tend not to post much (lots of threads around here to try and keep track of!)

    Recent OTC Blend Experiences

I want to like them because 1-they're old school and 2-I really appreciate the fact that I can go to the local grocery store and find them there! I will keep puffing them, at least the whole pouch of each. That's a fair shot, I feel. I really posted this to see if others have similar...

    Recent OTC Blend Experiences

I'm keeping the Prince Albert in my fly fishing pack, which means whenever I fish, it'll get smoked. We'll see what happens! I know it's lasted as long as it has for a reason.

    Recent OTC Blend Experiences

This past Sunday, on a much-needed family vacation, I was taking my daughters out fishing for a few hours. I left my tobaccy back at the cabin, unfortunately, so I decided to make a stop at a little mountain grocery store and buy some OTC blends. They had all the big names. CH, PA, CB, H&H. I...

American Revolution/Civil War: Book Recommendations Please.

I would say that Shaara's books are great, but they're fiction. "The Killer Angels", for example, was largely taken from Longstreet and Chamberlin's personal memoirs. Both were known for uh, "exaggerating" their role in both Gettysburg and the war as a whole. But if you read it w/ that in mind...

    Boswell Pipes

I have 2 Boswells and smoke them often. Love them. As noted above, the number of estates isn't necessarily indicative of their quality. Online you gotta jump on them, but making a trip to the store (well worth it!) will provide you with many options!

Does The Pain Ever Go Away?

I lost my brother about 3 years ago as well (April 12, he was 32-close to the age of your son). We are a (fly) fishing family, as well. 3 years in, and it still seems very raw and fresh. My parents are still (and probably will be the rest of their lives) in deep pain. As for me, I've been half...

    Best Live Band(s)

been to a lot of punk rock/hardcore type shows in my late teens and early 20s. They all kind of blur together, though Snapcase and Boy Sets Fire stood out. Now I'm a bit more mellow. Bela Fleck was phenomenal in concert. I saw the Eagles of Death Metal about 7 months ago in a small club and it...

    Pipe Building Kit

I saw it, thought it looked cool, but that site is just spewing the whole woodsman hipster-ness, and I just couldn't support a site propagating adult cos-play ;-)

    What's Your Lineage?

Ulster Scot and Irish on my mother's side, some sorta German/Austrian and Cherokee on my father's side. My wife is full blooded German, w/ her dad being an East German refugee. So my children are far more German than the Celtic blood I've clung to my whole life (though the Germanics were Celts!)

    How many...

Ahh...only 13 right now. I've had more, gotten rid of some throughout the years. I'm pretty selective about what I buy and can say that those 13 are all pipes I actually smoke.

Question for the English blend smokers

Concerning Northwoods and a crossover blend, I've heard that before. This is a great example of how a tobacco can manifest itself to different people in different ways. I've never, personally, gotten that impression from the blend. And in the past several months, I sent a bowl-full of the blend...

Other than pipe smoking I like to...

Like a few of the others, I fly fish. A lot. Not as much as I'd like, what with 3 kids, working in church ministry (which is NEVER "off the clock"-and part of what I like about pipes because I can pretty much do it anywhere while doing just about anything), but fly fishing is a big part of my...

Dr. Grabow Wartime Pipe? Pic Heavy

Wow...I had no idea they made pipes out of mountain laurel! That stuff is just a bane to me when fly fishing small streams. I will look upon it with new respect!

    Are competitions real smoking?

This is a question not unique to the pipe smoking hobby. I'm a fly fisherman, and one debate that constantly comes up is, does competitive fly fishing go against the "spirit" of fly fishing? I see the point of those who say it does, as for many of us, the solitude and isolation in nature, the...

is there such a thing as a peaty flavour tobacco

You're basically looking for an Islay tobacco? haha! Interesting concept. I'd be interested in hearing if any Islay fans have suggestions. I can recommend some tobaccos that pair very well with Islays, but I don't know that I've smoked anything that gives me that peaty/iodine (Laphroiag has a...

Friday the 13th and Freezing Rain

We had freezing rain earlier this week. Yesterday was 60 degrees! Today we're back int he 40s and looking at a wintry mix later tomorrow. Gotta love the Northeast.

    Beards and Beard Oil

It's snake oil for hipsters in the sense that no one should be paying those prices! As I said, a little olive oil or sesame seed oil from my kitchen cabinet works great for me. It's not snake oil in the sense of, some folks may just need oil in their beards. For me, it controls my "beard-druff"...
