    Lovely Birdseye Grain

Yesterday, nature gave me this challenge. Usually, I do not make cross grain pipes although this one is saying to me "make me into a paneled Billiard" . I don't know which grain would look nicer on the front side. :)

The Difference in Colour of Aged Briar

EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title (See Rule 9) - Bob This photo shows the colour of the shavings from the tobacco chamber of a plateau block that was in the show room at the Charatan factory in 1972. As well as being darker in colour it is also harder wood. The lighter colour is newer plateau...

    Charatan Summa Cum Laude

The Charatan Coronation on the previous thread is very nice and I think this one is a real 'corker'! Below is a photo of a photo that my father took of the first Charatan Summa Cum Laude – I think that there were only 3 ever made? He took this picture in the factory's showroom with a black &...

    Larrysson Straight Grain

I am so pleased to see one of very few 'pure' naturally finished clean straight grains (with a hand-cut vulcanite Cumberland mouthpiece) being made in England. The English tradition of handmade straight grains seems to be a thing of the past. Hopefully 'The Tradition Continues'! :

    Sharing My Excitement!

Here are a couple of photos showing the first eight blocks that I have cut on my old bench saw and prepared ready for turning yesterday. The grain on these blocks will become tighter after they are turned. When I cut plateau blocks, I do not to cut the block on the grain, I cut it just off the...

    Old Dunhill mouthpiece (orific)

I have come across an old Dunhill mouthpiece with a single draft hole right through (orific?). Has anyone seen one before - can it be dated? If they are not unusual, it will save me taking photos of this one!

    A question for Peterson specialists

I am trying to date a Peterson pipe twin set. The pair (both oval shanks with Peterson lip) are stamped Peterson's (with an apostrophe and a 'floral' P) London & Dublin Special(which is in a circle), and on the underside are stamped London Made England One pipe is a Canadian shape...

    Charatan question

I would like to know about one or two of these 'carved/blasted patch' straight grains that I have seen lately...

    'Just Finished My First Pipe'

This is a pipe I made yesterday - the first one since 1988. It was such fun and hand-cutting the mouthpiece was a real challenge. Obviously no stamp marks as I have no stamp dies yet and no background stain to help bring out the grain (or to make the grain pop!). This piece has been simply...

BBB meets Barling at the fit in 1887

Has anyone else seen this interesting combination? I don't know how to upload ebay shots but here is the link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BBB-Hall-Marked-1887-Silver-Mounted-Briar-Pipe-Amber-Mouthpiece-/292049241337?hash=item43ff7dc4f9:g:lNoAAOSwTuJYv-GK

Example of a shoddy Dunhill fake?

I was half hoping that this was a rare stamping mistake until I saw the mouthpiece! Did Dunhill ever make a shape like this? I realise now that it must be a fake as the stampings would be on the front and reverse side of the shank- unless someone re- sanded their shell and refinished the pipe...

My most favorite pipe of the year

Ingo Garbe is my most favorite pipemaker. I think the classic shape of this one is absolutely gorgeous. If I had the money, I would fly to where the pipe is, inspect it more closely and buy it. Approx $1500 is a steal for this one (in my opinion) For those people who want to see the other sides...

    Is this a dunhill patent?

Does anyone know if dunhill made a patent pipe stamped dunhill with a small d +pat no. 41751022 last digits unreadable I would be really interested to know. This is the ebay link http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DUNHILL-PATENT-SMOKERS-PIPE-/302114054009?hash=item4657669f79:g:uJkAAOSwHMJYCicQ

Is This the Most Heavily Filled Pipe in the World?

Hi, I was just browsing ebay and found this old Ben Wade and was shocked when I saw the photo of the other side of the bowl. Has anyone ever seen so much filling on one side of a pipe? I almost want to bid for it as this,in my opinion, is a rarity...

Visiting the James Upshall Factory last week

Two days ago I decided to go to the James Upshall Factory as I was in the area. On the way there, I was feeling excited and a bit wierd as I have not been there for 28 years. I seemed to know every bend in the road as though it was yesterday. I arrived there and the first thing I felt was the...
