Chicago Pipe Show 2018 - Official Picture Thread

I haven't made it to a meeting of the Chicago Pipe Club since last April, because of moving, having a baby, and seeming to always have unmovable events on club nights. Excited to see you and the other club members at the show, John!

    Forever Stems are Back

What are Forever Stems? They're high-quality stems designed for Missouri Meerschaum cobs, designed to replace the cheap plastic stems that come standard with most MM products. Forever Stems were made by Walker Briar Works, and then production was transferred to Old Log Cabin Pipeworks. I've been...

    Why Don't You Smoke Meerschaums?

The only meer I ever had had an unpleasant clay/mineral taste to it, even after many bowls. It reminded me of the sculpture kiln from my elementary school art class.

McClelland: "We're Just Going to Close the Doors"

jpmcwjr: Half-joking, but I think the advent of vapes played a big role in sparking the FDA crackdown, and the FDA seems to be a significant factor in the choice to close McClelland (rather than try to sell the company).

McClelland: "We're Just Going to Close the Doors"

    I blame vapes for this.

Which Phoenix/Scottsdale B&Ms are worth visiting?

Hilands wasn't even on my radar, and after doing minimal research on them I found other reasons to avoid them as well. Thanks for the heads-up.

    Arizona Pipers Get Together

Just posted a separate thread asking for Phoenix B&M recommendations, and then saw this thread. Any tips appreciated: http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/which-phoenixscottsdale-bampms-are-worth-visiting

Which Phoenix/Scottsdale B&Ms are worth visiting?

This weekend I'll be visiting my parents in Scottsdale, Arizona, and hope to be able to visit a B&M in the NE Phoenix area. If I was only going to hit one, which shop has the most interesting and unique selection of pipes and tobacco? - Ye Old Tobacco Shoppe - Stag Tobacconist (if so, which...

    Smoking a Pipe While Walking

Lunting doesn't work for me. I end up smoking too fast, and the whole experience feels contradictory to the reason I got into pipe smoking in the first place: to slow down and escape my busy world of multitasking. More power to you though.

Two New Workhorses for Under $100 Total - Tsuge Tasting and Nording Sailor

Jeffrey and Fitzy, thanks. The Tsuge smokes very well, so long as you're OK with a narrow bowl chamber. I was worried it might be hard to pack but ended up not having any problems with it. There are other shapes in the Tasting series with more standard-sized bowls too.

Two New Workhorses for Under $100 Total - Tsuge Tasting and Nording Sailor

I'm always on the lookout for great deals on pipes, and when I say great deals I mean less than $75 per piece. I'm convinced you really don't ever need to spend more than $100 to get an amazing pipe. I recently picked up two new pipes from SmokingPipes that cost me a total of $91, and they both...

Shoutout to User Stickframer for Surprise Generosity

Somehow I've been the recipient of random acts of kindness on these forums multiple times. It's quite humbling. The latest person to go out of their way to make my day was stickframer, AKA Rob. I posted recently about some thoughts related to the recent birth of my first child, a daughter...

Help Me Choose a Blend to Cellar for 18 Years as My Daughter Ages

dmcmtk, funny you say that. MM965 and Escudo are my top choices at this point, which are pretty close to what you suggested!

Help Me Choose a Blend to Cellar for 18 Years as My Daughter Ages

Warren, right now doing a Dunhill blend is my top choice, because their tins are $7.50/each on P&C and they're going out of production. With that said, a few favorites lately are: - SPC Mississippi River - H&H Classic Burley Kake - GL Pease Maltese Falcon - GL Pease Lagonda - GL Pease...

Help Me Choose a Blend to Cellar for 18 Years as My Daughter Ages

I recently mentioned celebrating the very recent birth of my first child. In that thread, txpiper07 suggested I buy tins from this year to cellar. That got me thinking... what if I bought 18 tins of the same tobacco, and opened one each year on my daughter's birthdays? Now, I'm not much of a...

    Piping Mishaps: Tales of Destruction

I cracked the shank on my Vauen Nobile churchwarden when I put a plastic 9mm spacer in to replace the filters. I put the stem back in and it must've been just a smidge wider than the filters. Such a bummer, because it was one of my nicer pipes. I've also snapped the tenons on two different pipes...

    First Pipe as a Dad

Thanks so much, everyone! Haven't made it outside for a second pipe yet since the baby's birth, but that's mostly because the rare free windows of time seem to be coming all during periods of rain. txpiper07, that's a great idea to cellar some tins. If I had infinite resources I'd buy 18...
