    Trouble finishing a bowl

Don’t sweat it. I almost never finish a bowl for a number of reasons. I have the same problem keeping it lit after the first half and secondly the taste begins to get sour. I tend to stop somewhere in the last third of the bowl. That being said I always chuckle when someone claims that he is...

My three rules of pipe smoking

Thanks for all the replies to my post. For those who where offended by my using the word „rules” I wish to point out that I specified these being MY rules. They apply to me only. I just wanted to share them because they may help a novice pipe smoker. In fact, if I had known them when I started...

My three rules of pipe smoking

Here are my three simple rules, that assure me a pleasant pipe smoke: 1. Smoke dryer than you think 2. Pack lighter than you think 3. Puff less than you think Nothing new and groundbreaking. I just wanted to share because I did all of them wrong first and that gave me plenty of bad smoking...

    Wellauer dunhill replacements

That’s interesting. Right after my first Wellauer 965 bowl I had a second one with the Dunhill version and it tasted almost exactly the same.

    Wellauer dunhill replacements

I like this blend quite a bit but I’m not sure how close it is to the original. Difficult to say since the Wellauer tin is a little on the moist side whereas my open Dunhill tin is quite dry and aged some years. The underlying sweetness of the cavendish is there but less pronounced than in the...

    Wellauer dunhill replacements

The real thing hasn't been made since the 1980's I never had the opportunity to taste these but the STG versions were my favorite blends. So any close copies are very welcome.

    Wellauer dunhill replacements

I haven’t been able to try this yet. I had to smoke some of my 965 stock to refresh my memory first. I will post my impression ASAP.

    Wellauer dunhill replacements

Of course but Wellauer is very well known and respected in our country for the quality of their products.

    Wellauer dunhill replacements

    Tried them yet?

    Wellauer dunhill replacements

Visiting the Wellauer tobacconist in St Gallen (CH) (http://www.welltabac.ch/wellauers-pfeifentabak/) I discovered, that they now have copied the whole range of the dunhill blends. Got me some 965 and give my impression here.

    Presbyterian and PS Amsterdam, Previews?

Presbyterian is one of my favourite light blends. It is a straight forward english blend, very balanced. One of my go to blends especially since EMP is no longer produced. In fact, Presbyterian may be my EMP replacement.

    Solani Gold

I hope you like it. It’s of course a matter of taste but this is one of the best english I ever smoked and I smoked quite a few in my 30 something years of pipe smoking.

    Solani Gold

Thank you. According to the Kohlhaase&Kopp Homepage it still contains Syrian. The Latakia however plays a not very prominent role. That makes me think, that switching from Syrian to Cyprian might work.

    Solani Gold

I just recently tried this blend and I really really like it. Halas, as we well know, Syrian Latakia is no longer produced and therefore it seems, that this wonderful tobacco will not continue to be produced for long, at least not in its actual composition. In fact I suspect, that production has...

New Three Nuns Mixtures: Virginia and PERIQUE

Is‘nt it nice to see that some companies produce new blends instead of stopping to produce them or going out of business altogether? I love the actual VaDFK version but I‘m looking forward to try the new flankers.

    The Quintessential English

Another brand to look at for english blends are Rattray’s. My favorite is Black Mallory. The addition of black cavendish (unflavored) makes it a smoke not to far from 965, albeit with a more generous dose of latakia. It’s sibling, Red Rapparee is great too, a tad sweeter and more oriental...

    End Getting Closer for Dunhill?

Thanks. Another blend that comes up often as a replacement for 965 is Old Dublin. Doesn’t hit the spot for me.

Is this normal drilling for a Dunhill bent?

I’m too lazy to post a picture of the drilling hole on my Dunhill bent. But I can assure you it looks exactly the same.

    End Getting Closer for Dunhill?

Nothing comes close to My Mixture 965. Of course GLP makes some stellar blends, I own quite a few but there’s none so far that I like half as much as MM 965. I hope this Oulette guy is already blending his Dunhill matches. And I wish folks would stop telling me that I should forget about the...

    Nightcap or 965?

965 is my favorite tobacco, closely followed by nightcap. Both will be sorely missed when the last tin is gone.
