    Old Pre-colored JTS Meerschaum

This old timer was listed as a BIN on eBay. It had the Make Offer function open so I did. It was an easy meet in the middle deal. The telltale sunset coloring of a lightly used pre-colored old meerschaum pulled me in. The case label says: JTS Best Make". Seems like it might be a store rebranded...

CPF Woodstock Alpha Delta Phi 1908

I bought this pipe primarily for the dated band. It's pretty unusual to find a dated American pipe. Normally I don't go for the woodstock shape. But this one is really nice. As bought, the silver band was badly tarnished. It was all black. Shining that up took more time than anything. The bowl...

CPF French Briar 4th of July Bulldog

Here's another pipe that caught my eye recently. 123herbert had 2 of these pipes for auction. One was unsmoked but otherwise pretty plain. The other was well used and had some sort of flag applique on the band. I have plenty of old plain bulldogs, so I went for the one with the flag. It arrived...

    Parker Super Briarbark Patent 1950

I've been restricting myself to buying eBay pipes I find unusual. A patent era Parker is something seldom enough seen to fall into that category. And I like the Parker blasts. I bought this one from a UK seller. When it finally arrived, my first thought was: "Uh-oh, I over paid for this one"...

    Old CPF Stubby Bulldog Mystery

I happened across this one on eBay and it piqued my curiosity. The pipe is well used. The rim was burned and low in one spot. I evened the rim just enough to lose the char. Making it horizontal to the bead would have taken too much off. The stamps are worn and barely there. I can make out "Best...

    Unsmoked Wellington

I just won this pipe on eBay. With the rounded nickel band it looks like a more upscale model. No P-lip. Army mount stem. Fishtail bit is probably slotted. My guess is 1930s. It needs a light cleaning but hasn't been smoked. I put in a low bid and was kind of surprised to win. It should be a...

    Antique NPW Cased Bent Meerschaum

This is my latest pipe. I gave it a cleaning and fixed some tooth wear on the amberoid stem. The rim cap is dinged a bit, but it's okay. The draft is decent and it smokes good. Probably a 1900ish pipe.

What is the earliest Well pipe?

You've probably seen this discussion before. But I've never seen a definitive answer to the question. Peterson patented the system pipe in 1890 or so. I think the form existed before then but I'm having a hard time proving it. As I find old photos and ads of well pipes I'll post them here...

    Pipe ads in old magazines

I know some you fellows are interested in the history of pipes and tobaccos. I'm interested in researching to history of some of the old American pipe making companies and their various brands. Not much is known about them except that which is gleaned from the occasional ad that pops up...

    Antique Cased Bulldog Threefer

I bought these on eBay a couple weeks ago. All from the same seller. From them and the other offerings I gather that they all came from the estate of a guy who loved old pipes and smoked and cared for them pretty well. What really grabbed me was the fine condition of all three cases. First up is...

A couple more Bakelite Era Pipes

My absolute favorite pipes to collect are early American pipes with cherry Bakelite stems. There is something about that shiny translucent red that really makes me happy. An accompanying case makes it even better. These two don't have cases but I can overlook it. I bought both of these from...

    Antique Chunky Ornate Meer

I'm putting this in the general pipe forum because I think this is a pretty cool old timer and probably more people will see it here. I got this pipe in the mail today and was excited to get started on cleaning it up. The ornate cap and band look like something that would have come out of India...

    New Larrysson

I was surprised to see some new Larrysson pipes on offer on eBay. I picked up this nice blast for a sweet price because he made the acrylic stem from a blank instead of hand cutting it. I can't tell the difference. It's a great looking well engineered pipe. Not that that's a surprise. The...

    WDC Military Mount Bulldog

I picked this one up in bad shape. Only marks I could see were the fancy lettered "French Briar". It had an Art Nouveau look that suckered me in. And the stamp is in great shape. Turned out the stem had been super glued. By the look of it I assumed it was Bakelite. I tried the heat gun to...

Old Cased L.B. Best Make Bent Clarion

I just picked this one up. It has the Generic "French Briar" case logo. The "Best Make" stamp I usually associate with CPF. I have no idea who L.B. was. I like the look a lot. It's a big bent well pipe with a thick sexy cherry Bakelite stem. The band and leaf applique look like there was...

    Peterson Mark Twain Questions

I've picked up another Mark Twain to refurbish. Checking the hallmarks shows it to be a 1981 pipe (P). I thought I remembered the '81 pipes being numbered editions. So I checked Pipepedia and yes, they show '81 Mark Twains numbering 1-1000. But I cannot find a number on this pipe. Where should...

    1957 Parker

I just got this pipe in yesterday from an ebay auction. It's a Parker Super Briar Bark 108/F. It's one of the dated pipes with an underlined 7 designating it as a 1957 vintage. It's a very light pipe. The blast is very deep and craggy. It has a good quality ebonite fishtail stem. It measures in...

    Merchant Service Bing

I've read several times about Bing Crosby owning Merchant Service pipes. About that being the definitive Bing shape. So for the second time I think, I hunted for one. They are hard to find. I finally found one on ebay and got it at a decent price. Proportions are about the same as my Sasquatch...

    Manhattan Rescue

I like old Manhattan pipes. They are in the same category as old WDC and CPF pipes. American branded pipes that run the full spectrum of quality. So anyway, I saw this cased Manhattan on ebay. I could see it was missing a cap. I hate that. You fill the nail holes, sand the rim impression away...

New Estate Askwith from Briar Blues

I just received this nice Askwith pipe with a white Bakelite stem from Briar Blues. It's an ebay purchase. The pipe came in perfect condition and might be the cleanest pipe I've ever bought on ebay. I'm impressed (and I'm picky!) and would be happy to buy from BB again. I've had a couple...
