What Turned You on to Pipes?

When I was young, my best friend's father was a pipe and cigar smoker, and I had an immense respect for the man. He had a great collection of pipes, mostly ornate meerschaums. He was always smoking one or the other. And when I encountered the works of Tolkien the deal was sealed. For almost 40...

    Penzance vs Margate....

I always thought Penzance was the C&D Captain Bob's Blend to Margate's Captain Black Grape? Was I misinformed?

    2018 MLB Playoffs

NH Red Sox fan here. There was a time in my life that I would be like "oh no, here we go again - 1-1 vs the Yankees, it's gonna happen again!". But I've lived to enjoy three World Series championships in the last fifteen years so I am not complaining ever again. I cannot even describe the...

Shelby Foote's Civil War Trilogy...Any Good?

I want to thank everyone for this thread. I remember watching The Civil War documentary many years ago, and I just watched it again thanks to this thread. I also started reading Shelby Foote's Civil War trilogy and I am hooked! What an excellent writer. Thank you, thank you, for turning me on to...

Favourite Musicians and Acts Still Going Strong

We've seen a lot of good shows this year. Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Keb Mo, John Prine, Patty Griffin, Colin Hay, Mavis Staples, for “old timers”. We've seen a lot of newer acts, too. Emmylou Harris is still touring; she has a concert coming up with Steve Earle soon. Elton John...

    Favorite Type/Brand of Knife

I collect Benchmade, Spyderco (those made in the USA), and Zero Tolerance knives; both fixed-blade and folding. For the kitchen we use New West Knifeworks out of Montana. We have a Wusthof Blackwood block set and a few Bob Kramer Henckels, too. But the New West Knifeworks knives are really...

What Do You Do For a Living? 2nd edition

I just retired at age 51 after 27 years as a health economist for one of the largest health insurance companies in America. I accomplished absolutely nothing, and was paid absurd amounts of money to do so. And the people I worked for accomplished even less than I did, and were paid even more to...

    Finally, Employed

Congratulations, and welcome to NH! Your moniker suggests you'll be working in the Seacoast area? It's beautiful there, and the seasons are milder than inland.

    Favorite English Pipes

Northern Briars and Ferndown. I have about twenty of each, wide variety of shapes, and I love each one. My favorite smokers.

    Jim's Peretti Cambridge Flake Review.

One of my favorite flakes from Peretti. Thanks for the great review, Jim. I love to read your review of a blend while I am smoking the very blend. I try to taste what you describe; usually with little success, but it does make the smoke all the more enjoyable.

Ric Farrah of Briarville Pipe Repair on Radio Show of Jan 2, 2018

Ric repaired a Ferndown pipe of mine a year or two ago, and it was "like new" when he had finished. The price was very reasonable, and there was a very quick turnaround, too.

Smoking outside in a Maine Winter

Tried to do a little logging today here in central NH. Managed to do very little, as temps were similar to Banjo's arctic conditions. Took the wife out for some seafood and local brew instead, and now sitting in the garage with my trusty space heater smoking some OJK and thoroughly enjoying life...

A Year without Tobacco: 6-Months In

I work for a health insurance company, and in our employee health benefit policy there is an exemption for tobacco use if it is used for "religious or ceremonial" purposes. So... I am enjoying a little tobacco ceremony right now.

    RIP: Malcolm Young Of AC/DC.

I was 13 and 14 when Highway to Hell and Back in Black were released. I believe that these two albums represent one of the best consecutive album releases ever. I was never a huge fan, but I do greatly enjoy these two albums.

    Veteran Parking!

I like the idea of veteran parking. As to the "dishonorable veterans" that don't deserve a spot, I say there are always a few in every group that spoil things, but we should not let that deter us from respecting the rest. There are probably some disabled people that cheat on their taxes or beat...
