    Drying aromatics?

A tip I use when the tobacco appears to be smokably dry and I have smoked some of it: If there is a lot of moisture in the pipe and if the tobacco needs to be re-lit often, then I dry it some more. If I want to keep the partially smoked tobacco that's already in the pipe, I just set the pipe...

    The Obligatory Newbie Thread: Dunhill

Let's see what the author of Winnie The Pooh had to say about this 102 years ago.... "For whereas men of an older school, like myself, smoke for the pleasure of smoking, men of this school smoke for the pleasure of pipe-owning—of selecting which of their many white-spotted pipes they will fill...

    BIC EZ Reach Lighters

I like the BIC EZ Reach lighters for pipe smoking. It's very good at directing the flame where needed to light a pipe. They are widely available at national retailers like Walmart. The flame is not adjustable but it is a good practical size for lighting a pipe. I prefer them to the standard BIC...

    Your Cellar Size

About 2 pounds, most of it blends I have not tried before.

    Zippo For Infrequent Smoker

I do like the Zippo pipe lighter, but I have to refill it every few days. I switched to butane because I was refilling the lighter about as often as I was smoking. I think of it as a better choice for the frequent smoker because it's durable, and inexpensive if it needs to be replaced.

Peterson lighter is pretty darn good!

I use a Peterson pipe lighter and it works very well, including reasonably well outdoors if you can get out of the wind. It holds a lot of fuel. Considering the importance of a good lighter to pipe smoking, I consider it a good idea to try a variety of lighters, including the Peterson if you...

    OXO POP Containers

I like OXO POP containers as humidors. Target and kitchenware stores sell them. Allows me to keep my tins airtight and humidity controlled with Boveda packs. The tall ones that hold 5 pounds of flour work very well. I tried jars but don't like them as much as this. But then I don't keep a lot of...

    Semois Bouchon Pipe Tobacco

Thank you! Do you happen to know if Le Petite Robin is the kind of tobacco that a kiseru and kizami smoker would like? Or is the similarity of the cut just coincidence? Also, I've seen pictures of kiseru pipes, the smaller ones about the length of a man's hand. The bowl is so tiny. How long...

    The Obligatory Newbie Thread: Dunhill

Over the years I have seen several newbie posts here, the gist of which is "are Dunhill pipes worth it?". In keeping with the tradition of newbie posting about Dunhill, I'll do my part. 1) I can recall no instance of a Dunhill smoker that complained about how crappy his pipe is. I just don't...

    Decatur Pipe Wax is Good

Good idea. I usually fill the bowl 2/3 to 3/4 full. That's my habit not so much to protect the pipe, but because I like to keep my smoking down to 30 to 40 minutes per session.

    Decatur Pipe Wax is Good

The ones I have (lightly) charred are charred mostly because of the angle at which I lit the pipe. After seeing the damage I started lighting my pipes so that the pipe is level rather than at a downward sloping angle. Today, I am more concerned with the flame of a lighter used outdoors. It...

What Are The Physics Of "Thick Wall = Cool Smoke"?

I disagree with the premise that thicker pipe chamber walls necessarily yield a "cooler" smoke. Smoking quality is determined by a system of things that include tobacco chemistry, tobacco moisture, the smoker's mouth chemistry and puffing style, chamber depth and diameter, packing style...

    School me on Pipe Cleaners

I have settled on Bryco Thoro Kleen pipe cleaners because some of my pipes have airways too small for fluffy or tapered cleaners. They are also widely available. The comparable Long's cleaners also work for me. I also use Long's churchwarden pipe cleaners for a churchwarden and for a Savinelli...

    Excellent Reading for the Beginner

Fred Hanna's great book called "The Perfect Smoke" is what improved my enjoyment of pipe smoking more than any other single source. He does a great job of explaining the potential for pleasure that pipe smoking offers. In particular, his writing about the seven essential skills of pipe smoking...

    Semois Bouchon Pipe Tobacco

I was likewise intrigued by their Le Petite Robin blend and I just ordered some earlier this week, but I have no experience with it yet. It is very well regarded at TobaccoReviews. Le Petite Robin is a shag tobacco cut so finely that it has been compared to kiseru Japanese tobacco. Good luck...

    European Aromatics

Title shortened and capital added. (Rule 9, please) Original title: "European aromatics as a family of tobaccos" I have not been a big fan of American style aromatics because the ones I tried either didn't have much flavor or they had a lot of topping flavor that I didn't care for. I like the...

Pencil graphite for hard to remove and replace stem

I was doing regular cleaning on one of my briar pipes yesterday. Not daily cleaning, but the less frequent cleaning that involves removing the stem and using alcohol (vodka), a pipe brush, pipe cleaners, and Q-tips to clean the airways and joints. It's been hot and humid here and one of the...

    Decatur Pipe Wax is Good

I smoke outside and regularly have lighter flame that touches the rim of my pipe. With the idea of protecting the finish I decided to try Decatur pipe wax, which is available now that Halcyon and Paragon appear to be unavailable. Decatur is very good. Instructions are to leave the wax on the...
