    Aromatics & Hypersalivation

You've experienced adverse chemical reaction. Stop smoking that tobacco. If the symptoms persist with other tobaccos, stop smoking altogether.

    Obsidian Oil?

Does obsidian oil really prevent oxidation of vulcanite stems? Should I be using it regularly?

The Golden Age Of Pipe Smoking

We're living in the Golden Age Of Pipe Smoking now. Fewer smokers competing for raw materials like briar. Excellent materials. Excellent history of refinements to pipe design in recent decades. Precision machinery for making good pipes. Good craftsmen dedicated to doing good work. Competitive...

    And Vaping Too

I never paid any attention to this legislative stuff until I started seeing news stories about how vaping is in the crosshairs of regulatory bureaucrats. I fail to see how it is productive to punish the safer alternatives to cigarettes when it is specifically cigarettes that are the cause almost...

    Instruments Make Me Laugh

I'm mad as heck and I'm not gonna take it any more! ;) It makes me laugh when I see fountain pens referred to as "writing instruments" and tobacco pipes referred to as "smoking instruments". I'd also laugh if I saw silverware referred to as eating instruments and pillows referred to as...

    Looking For Demographic Info

I'm looking for demographic information about pipe smokers. What kind of people are smoking them? How many? What parts of the world? Do you know of any such data?

Do Differences in Meershaum Pipes Quality Exist ad/or Matter?

I have three meerschaums, one AKB and two IMPs. All are smooth rather than ornate. They are all good pipes but the IMPs are much better overall, especially in the way the stem is designed. You will note that the IMPs are more expensive, and that is for good reason. They are all excellent smoking...

    Ebachon Production in Corsica

Very good! It took me a while to get to this video, but I'm glad I watched it. Thank you for posting it.

    4th Generation Pipe Pouch Differences

I have two of the 4th Generation pipe pouches and I like them both. There is a significant difference between the black ones and the brown ones: The leather of the black one is more supple and soft. The brown one is relatively stiff but not very stiff. Both are good, but the texture and softness...

Is a Zippo Pipe Insert Really Better?

I'm in the other camp. A couple of Q-tips and some rubbing alcohol clean both zippo and butane lighters in a jiffy. I do it when I replace flints.

The Root Cause of Tongue Bite

My take on it is that the root cause of tongue bite is bad smoking technique. Change the moisture level of the tobacco, change the way you pack and light and puff. If all else fails, try a different kind of tobacco. Tweak the fundamentals until you get a perfect smoke consistently.

Is a Zippo Pipe Insert Really Better?

I like the Zippo pipe lighter. It's a good design that works well. However, I switched to butane because I don't smoke often and I found myself having to refill the Zippo for almost every smoke. The Zippo design has withstood the test of time and it deserves the praise that it gets.

    Storing Tins

I like vacuum sealed tins because they can be stored without special preparation. When I open a tin it goes into the humidor.

The Good Old Days? - New Article by G.L. Pease for September 2022

That really is an interesting angle on pipe durability. I'd like to see pictures of smoked out pipes and info about what happens when a pipe is smoked out. I am guessing that the pipes have to be heavily smoked to wear them out. I have heard and read of people who would replace their pipes...

    Nope To Plasma Lighter

I like the concept of a plasma lighter for pipes but I don't like the design of the ones that are available. They don't look like you can put the "flame" far enough into a pipe bowl to light the tobacco. Am I wrong?

    Queen Elizabeth II

The Queen did a superb job of being the symbolic face of British national pride and identity, especially considering that her time as Queen was during a period of dramatic transition for Britain. It appears that King Charles has already risen to the occasion of his ascendency to the throne and I...

    Opinion on Peterson System Pipe

I have no experience with the system pipes, but I do greatly enjoy the Peterson spigots. It makes maintenance easy, and it's a strong connection between stem and stummel. I also like the way it looks. I like the idea of combining the system plumbing and the spigot for easy access to clean the...

    Briar Tampers

I like the 8deco Legend tampers sold by SmokingPipes. It's a very good design and there is a spike tool that you access by unscrewing one end of the tamper. It's very practical because it has tamper, scoop, and spike in a very convenient and easy to use design.

    Simple, Beginner Humidor?

There are a lot of well sealed air-tight plastic boxes available at home goods stores. They have gaskets and snap-top lids. They are not expensive. Boveda makes 60 gram humidity control packs. I prefer the 72% pack, others like lower humidity, 65% for pipe tobacco. The packs last several months...

When to dump the ash and light up again?

It varies from tobacco to tobacco. If you find that your re-lit tobacco only stays lit for a brief time and there is not excessive moisture in the tobacco, then loosening some of the ash with your pipe tool and dumping it, then tamping the remaining tobacco will likely help the next re-light...
