How to get several extra minutes from every bowl!

The Senior Pipe Reamer has been mentioned a lot here, but here's something to think about: the buildup inside the pipe happens so gradually that I often don't pay much attention to the diminishing volume of tobacco a pipe will hold. It's dark in there, hard to see. Being a total engineering...

SG Kendal Plug - Getting back to my well aged collection

Jarred in 2012. Plug is hard as a rock. I peeled about a quarter-of-an-inch-thick layer off, cut it lengthwise, then cubed it with a cigar cutter. Then rubbed it out vigorously, but still ended up with a basic cube cut. Took three or four lights, then settled into a reliable easy smoke. This is...

    My Oldest Tobacco

Many years ago I walked into a pipe shop, I think it was in Michigan but I can't even remember the city. Maybe Flint, because I remember buying a pipe from Paul's Pipe Shop (an amazing place!), but this place wasn't Paul's. Started talking to the guy, looking for tins with some age on them, and...

    Gawith Tour

Being an engineer, I love old machines. Years ago I saw a post that provided some photos of the Gawith factory. Somewhere I seem to remember reading that one of the oldest pieces of industrial equipment still in regular use is in this factory. It may be either the tobacco press or the flake...

Revor Plug - Getting back to my well aged collection

Revor Plug, jarred in 2009. A bit dry, but still in good shape. It burns better dry, so that's not a problem for me. Let me start by saying I categorically dislike aromatics, and the Lakeland essence, although greatly mellowed with age, is still there in the jar. But I have noticed something...

    My favorite.

I made this a few years ago after obtaining a particularly nice piece of briar. Smokes great, feels good in the hand, stays cool from the mass of wood, and has a pretty big bowl, all the things I love in a pipe!

One of my favorite DIY "blends"

A while back I pressed some Full Virginia Flake with some Balkan Flake, both from Sam Gawith, at a ratio of 50/50. This is one of my favorites! I love a good straight Virginia, but English blends are my preference, and this is a wonderful compromise.

McClelland Blackwoods Flake - Getting back to my well aged collection

The components are "sweet red Virginias and hearty black stoved Virginias." Quite black from being in the jar since 2007. Jar aroma is overwhelmingly affected by the signature McClelland vinegar/ketchup smell (always a turn off for me), but it does not come across in the smoke at all...

    Musings on Tobacco Economics

I go through stages. Last three to four years it's been mostly cigars. But that's getting expensive! Even here in Louisiana where tobacco taxes are nothing like, say, California, prices have been rising. I miss the old days when I could buy Ashton VSGs for six bucks! True, mail order can make a...

Wessex Gold Plug - Getting back to my well aged collection

Jarred in 2009. Still in great shape. The jar aroma is classic Virginia, grassy with a definite sweet note that is tantalizing. Straight Virginias have never been my favorite, but lately I've been really enjoying most of the VAs in my older collection. Except for this one. I don't hate it, it's...

Kendal Kentucky - Getting back to my well aged collection

My jar is from 2009. Still in great shape, perfect humidity. Over the years I have decidedly NOT liked burley blends, but now I know the secret: this stuff is wonderful after 15 years in the jar! A very fine shag cut which means it's easy to pack it too tightly. Its a classic from an old school...

G&H Dark Plug - Getting back to my well aged collection

I jarred this stuff about 12 years ago. Don't let anyone tell you Ball jars don't work. I have yet to have one fail on me. This stuff is in great shape. I start by peeling about an eight of an inch, cut it in strips with a scissors, then cut the strips into little chunks. I rub them a little...

Bill Bailey's Balkan Blend - Getting back to my well aged collection

After many years of cigar smoking (not exclusively, but almost), I now have a very large collection of pipe tobaccos in the 10 to 15 year old range. I took great care to jar a bunch of bulk, and still have quite a few tins. I thought I might start reviewing some of them. This BBBB was jarred in...
