    SP's Fresh Pipes Going Stale

Pipes can retain their freshness for years if vacuum sealed. The heavy mylar is best.

Story Behind the Names of Pipe Shapes?

Yes, the Lovat - my favorite shape. If you want to feel the hair raise on the back of your neck read about his hard day at the office on D Day. I also wonder about my other two favorite shapes - Canadian and Lumberman. Meaningless marketing I assume. And I also wonder about the multiple...

    Show Off Your Petersons Here!

Huh, I don't know what cumberland is. I'm assuming it's acrylic - it's nice and glassy hard.

    Show Off Your Petersons Here!

I'm really in love with this new sandblast Irish Harp Lovat shape. One of the best smoking pipes I've ever encountered, and it's only on its second bowl.

Wring out the Full Virginia Flake

I pop a wet tin of this or some of the other wet blends (Old Dark Fired, etc.) and leave the lid off the tin for 24 hours. Then I stir it all up and tear it and shred it and put it back in the tin and don't do anything else. The ambient moisture in the tobacco and the tin's inherent ability to...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2024?***

That's great. I love Ser Jacopo's beautiful, whimsical shapes.

***What Are You Smoking, July 2024?***

Another wonderful bowl of this 20 year old Old Gowrie in my brand spanking new Peterson 53 Irish Harp sandblast. First bowl in a new pipe, not a bad way to start the morning.

How Biased Are Pipe Tobacco Reviews

I only read Jim Inks' reviews, and the ones in Chinese.

    Your Own "Best" Tobacco

Pease's Westminster. It's the indispensable blend for me. If I could only have one, that's what it would be. I have yet to try so many others though so who knows what the years may bring.

    Show Us Your Cellar

But you have good taste! And you have excellent taste in Scotch - I love Aberfeldy! Made just a few minutes from where my family comes from near Loch Tay.

A Package of the Good Stuff Arrived

Westminster is simply fantastic. I have another pound tin incoming. Always wondered about Merry Monk, this inspires me to try it. Still have no idea what a Scottish bend is though.

    Always the Expensive Pipes…

I kind of have a $200 limit and am trying to get a few of my favorites every year. I love Neerups and would have a dozen if I could. I'll wind up with a few...and a few of the better Petersons, and some ebay finds. But the ones I really use all the time, my walking and driving and workshop...

What's Similar to Newminster 400 SNF or HH Virginia Flake?

Yes - you can basically wait to shop the sales and never pay full price. Between smokingpipes, tobaccopipes, cupojoe's, and a couple others, you can find basically anything on sale. Get on the waiting list for out of stock favorites and they'll email you as soon as they come in stock...

***What Are You Smoking, June 2024?***

That settles it - that's my next Peterson! What a great pipe.

Cellaring- How Long is too Long?

Most tobacco will benefit from a year on the shelf. I don't think this is news. Some blends are ready to go, but many times blends are made with new tobacco and can reflect the harshness sometimes associated with "green" tobacco leaf. Sometimes the big websites will hold a sale on a tobacco...

***What Are You Smoking, June 2024?***

Broke open a rarity, a 24 year old tin of Old Gowrie. Seal held perfectly and the contents are perfectly dry/moist. It smells like citrus and maybe plums and maybe some BBQ sauce and maybe cedar and leaf litter from the forest floor. The taste is not sweet - the sugars have departed leaving...

Hey, Anyone Heard of C&Ds "Mad Fiddler"

I really like Mad Fiddler, but it took a couple of bowls for it to hit home. It's a delight. In that series I also really, really like Awakened Elder - a super English - and am stocking it deep in my cellar. The rest I'm not too torqued about but I've only got so much mental and physical...

    Royal Yacht Buzz

Royal Yacht was one of my first loves but it does pack a punch. Like Mark Twain said about riding a bicycle, "Try it - you won't regret it if you live."

    Palate Refinement

Pick a blend that is well reviewed on Tobacco Reviews. Especially JimInks reviews. Pack and slowly slowly sip/savor the smoke and work hard trying to pick up what the reviewers got. If they talk about things you don't know the flavor of (I've never had rose hip tea or anise seed for instance)...

    Long Term Aging/Storage

The easy answer is mason jars. But they're bulky. I'm a big believer in vacuum sealed food bags - I got a vacuum sealer off ebay and I can easily store tins, boxes, loose bulk, anything. It's nice when you get a pound of flake in a cheap zip lock bag and you can just stick it in a vacuum bag...
