    Stirling Flake == Irish Flake?

    What I gleaned from the clerk was that they were not made at the same time, but that Wallace and Stirling flakes were introduced after Rattray's stopped making University and Irish flakes for Peterson.

    Show Us Your Blatter Pipes

    My wife picked these up on a trip to Montreal last year. We're just inaugurating them now on our new porch with some JJ Fox Vintage mixture from the late 80's-mid 90's.

    Stirling Flake == Irish Flake?

    I was told by a reputable source (tobacconist at Iwan Ries) that it is and it isn't. Stirling flake is made by one of the many houses that at one time or another produced blends for Peterson. When they lost the contract (or gave it up, I don't know how it ended) they developed Stirling flake and...

    Steve Albini Has Died

    I actually like the Rapeman record the best of all his projects, but that's probably more to do with the fact that it was one of maybe a dozen cassettes I kept in the car for a long time. But only the Shellac stuff is on 180g virgin vinyl where the rhythm section just makes me happy. Imagine...

    First Smoke on the New Porch!

    They started siding around the garage, which is the other side of our breezeway here. Behind me you can just make out the old walnut tree we used to find shade and cool breezes under in high summer whose location and orientation drove the design of this outdoor space. The plasterer is just...

    Steve Albini Has Died

    He took Anthony Bourdain to Ricobene's and then got really annoyed by his questions.

    Steve Albini Has Died

    As someone who came up in the Chicago punk scene after he had done most of the hard work to create it, this makes me quite wistful. Time to pull out some of the ole waxtrax records...

    Pack and Tap: Is my Strange Way Wrong?

    I do this with "broken flake" style blends to try and orient the chunks a little better in the bowl. There's just too much air space/relights and risk of over-tamping otherwise. I don't do it with finer cuts (ribbon or shag) or with rolled and stuffed true flakes. If you need more confirmation...

    Commissioned Set of Two Pipes Less Than 1k, Received!

    You don't even have to come up with your own. I just searched thingiverse for "pipe stand" and there's ready to print designs already published! Strangely, none with property surveys included...

    Commissioned Set of Two Pipes Less Than 1k, Received!

    It doesn't look like much rise at this scale, but I swear that hill may as well be Everest whenever I'm trying to push the mower up it.

    Commissioned Set of Two Pipes Less Than 1k, Received!

    I was trying to have this 3D printed stand made by the show to focus my Spouse's attention on the fact that this was a set of two pipes for us, specifically, but struggled with the CAD. It is a scale model of our property topography from the survey along with two pipe shaped divots and a model...

    Happy Dave Brubeck Day!

    Was this his birthday or is it because of the time signature 5/4?

    May The Fourth…

    Thanks! I'm on the Pulaski bus right now en route to Weegee's Lounge for classic cocktails with a few friends. Way better than spending hours standing in line to pay $50 to have a toy signed by someone who says they were one of the background Jawas when they were an 8 year old son of a grip.

    May The Fourth…

    May 4th has been my birthday for 50 years as of now. That predates the original movies by a little and the cultural dominance by a lot. Maybe it's just the half-century talking - but I really wish your children's space opera would get off my lawn. Happy Hack-becomes-billionaire day!

    Walt Cannoy Suedeblast

    I'm not usually a blast guy, but that's a very attractive surface finish. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

    Anyone have Dunhill innertubes?

    Measure carefully. Britain was not using the metric system at the time of that patent. Could be 3mm (.1182 inch) or 1/8" (3.17mm). The switch officially was in 1965, and I'm sure no shops just wholesale threw out tooling or materials to comply right away.

    A DTM/Orlik Question for Those in the Know

    Eric Stokkebye makes himself available for talks at pipes and tobaccos events and shows worldwide. He is, so far as I know, the most notable concern making special - above market prices - limited edition tobaccos. See 4th generation Peaty Kentucky, etc. it would not be too hard to ask him if...
