    Best Budget English

Since the OP was for budget, does C&D Byzantium count as an English since it has no Virginia? Great stuff for $40/lb.

The Virginia People And The Burley People

Have you tried C&D Byzantium? It’s one of my favorite smoky blends: Latakia, orientals, and Perique. Great stuff.

    The Joy Of Discontinued Pipes

The brand I collect died around 1970, so yeah, I have a thing for discontinued pipes. Makes the hunt fun!

    Pocket Pipes

I have a couple Briarlee Strollers from the 1950s. They were a second line to the main brand I collect, and the Strollers are basically nose warmers with thick, short stems and thick-walled bowls with decently sized chambers. Easy to clench on a stroll, and fit neatly in a pocket.

The Virginia People And The Burley People

I’m a burley and dark Ky type. I haven’t found a straight Va or Va-dominant blend that I really like except for a couple Perique-heavy VaPers and Gawith XX Twist—which has the smoky charred meat taste rather than grass/hay/ketchup of lighter Va. I like Va in a blend if it’s a condiment or the...

    Cutting Back

This. I enjoy too many different blends, and have 48 jars in a pair of soda crates to grab from, plus more unopened. Sure I have favorites, but haven’t settled on a few daily smokes.

Preferred Pipes And Methods For Flakes

Watermelon should never be consumed unsalted, particularly when soaked in tequila.

    Stingers

If they really worked, we’d likely still have them in most pipes today. I keep mine intact purely for the history.

Dr. Grabow, The U.S. Briar Factory Pipe King?

Grabows in the estate market are so common you just about can’t find a lot which doesn’t include at least one. From a volume standpoint it appears they may be the king.

    Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob

I’ve got a basket of MMs that I use for aromatics. When used with a balsa filter they absorb most of the extra moisture and let me enjoy aros without gurgle or tongue bite.

    Stingers

I have 30+ Pipe by Lee pipes. About half have the original stingers. To date I’ve been keeping them intact and find that they smoke most non-aromatic/wet blends great with the stinger. There’s one exception…the sole Oom Paul gurgles with all but the driest tobaccos. There are others that toss...

How To Loosen A Stuck Stinger.

I had one stuck that freed up when I propped it up so just the stinger was submerged in alcohol. I snipped a short piece of pipe cleaner and jammed it into the stinger to try to draw some of the alcohol into the inside. Not pretty, but it worked.

Outdated Pipe That Works For You

About half of my 30 or so Pipe by Lee pipes have stingers, which makes them an outdated design, but great smokers.

    Favorite Aromatics

The only aros I can’t live without are the ones my wife finds pleasant, currently Lane’s 1Q and Dark Red. I may have found replacements for them that she’s ok with, have good flavor, and aren‘t a goopy mess: various aros from Milan Tobacconists. For example, while Dark Red gets goopy for me...

Everyone's Favourite and Why... AND GO!

    Hmmm…that one looks familiar ?

    The Strong Tobacco Expedition

Most of the blends I prefer—right now—are either high Latakia like Star of the East or Pirate Kake, or burley/dark fired Ky based, with the latter making up most of my daily rotation. I have almost no sense of smell, so I don’t get much flavor from lighter blends. The tobaccos I have pounds of...

When, Where, and Why Do You Smoke?

Before the craziness, I usually had a bowl in the morning before work, and one in the evening after dinner. Now that I’m working from home, it’s usually a couple bowls in the afternoon while I work on my laptop on the back porch. I have an occasional pipe driving my Miata with the top down, but...

    “Pipe by Lee” 3-Star (5-pt) Dublin-ish Cleanup

Looked for a Lee Dublin a long time before being gifted one by a forum member. Then last week I picked up this banged up Dublin—not quite a billiard, but not as much forward cant as I expect of a Dubli—for $14 incl. s/h. The rim was charred and chipped pretty badly, stem fully oxidized…it even...

    Cleanup Savinelli Samanda

Nice. You really made the grain pop!
