New Gawith Releases (in US) Confusion

North Star is great but licorice is very mild.

    My Mailbox was Blasted....

Very cool. Sadly the Hearth & Home blends I believe were made by Sutliff and now discontinued. All great stuff though! The generosity of our members never fails to amaze and inspire me. Enjoy!

Did we just lose Presbyterian in Europe?

I was interested to see it in a 100g tin.

Inform Me On Watch City Cigar, Ravenwood, And KBV.

I haven’t tried Old Dominion but hear it’s great. I highly recommend 558. I wouldn’t skip Nor’easter. It’s a great blend. If you like burley blends then Waltham Broken cake is excellent.

Inform Me On Watch City Cigar, Ravenwood, And KBV.

That’s happened to me a few times. If i’m away from the forums, all of a sudden the tobacco world has changed.

Inform Me On Watch City Cigar, Ravenwood, And KBV.

Both Ahab’s Comfort and Nor’easter are going away because they were produced by Sutliff. Really great stuff though and they still have stock. Ernie Q is coming up with new blends as we speak and I don’t doubt they will be home runs.

    HH Burley Flake Replacement Recommendations

Ernie was pretty clear that if something changes significantly he will discontinue the blend. He’s working on new blends but will also reconfigure the old ones that relied on Sutliff but they would be released under a different name. I think he said they’re getting their own press. Should be...

    HH Burley Flake Replacement Recommendations

I remember reading that a customer who asked was told they would be largely unaffected (maybe the flakes?) but the best thing to so would be to contact them directly. I don’t remember which forum thread I read that in so can’t point you to it.

Anyone Else Love the KBV Blends... Cellar Flex!

I think that will restock soon. I have an order coming next week but Pepper Jelly was out when I finally pulled the trigger.

Robert McConnell Tobacco for Home Blending

Money aside, I think the type of blend that you get using EU blending tobacco will be quite different even if you follow the same exact recipe. C&D blends are unique but especially the burley, which is uncased.

Why Are There So Few Burley Flakes Available?

Update to my previous post: @jeremyreeves has said in a few places that they use largely uncased leaf for most of their blends.

Need Some Help Here From Fans Of Magnum Opus

if I remember correctly (IF!!!!) this was a blend Russ had worked on with Balkan Sobranie as a model.

Why Are There So Few Burley Flakes Available?

Yes. Per Ernie Q from Watch City, every commercially available tobacco (unless you’re buying unprocessed whole leaf) will have some sort of casing which is largely there to balance PH (there are many other directions to go but PH is a big one)

    Question for Sandblast Lovers

Sorry. Confused Parker with Hardcastle which was its own company before being bought by Dunhill. That’s what I get for going from memory.

    Question for Sandblast Lovers

I’m not sure since I’m going on memory but I think Parker was still its own brand in the 20s.

    Question for Sandblast Lovers

It’s counter-intuitive but straight grain produces ring grain blasts. Another reason that ring grain is more typical on higher end pipes - bc the block has to start as straight grain.

    Question for Sandblast Lovers

Beyond the type of briar itself it’s about grading each briar block. I don’t know the percentages but the number of Punto Oro smooth pipes is based on a relatively few blocks that will yield the type of grain needed. The vast majority are going to be dark stained rusticated pipes with lots of...

Third Tin Of Regents Flake With Mold Issues

Yes, C&D is the blender. I’ve heard they’ve always made good on mold occurrences. I know that if you bought it from SP they would replace it directly. I’m not sure how it works with other retailers.

    "HUDSON VALLEY PIPE CLUB" (NY)

Thanks for the info, Sean. It’s nice to see local events even if I can’t t be there.

    "HUDSON VALLEY PIPE CLUB" (NY)

Hey Dover. Is this an annual event or just for the anniversary? Don’t think I’m able to make it but maybe in the future.
