Dunhill Blends - Murray-Orlik Transition Question

Thanks! Nonetheless I doubt that it is a genuine Murray's tin. The Murray's tins were painted (same for Erinmore) and did not have a sticker. Also the brass edge is an Orlik thing. I'm in possession of many old tobacco catalogues. Here is a screenprint from a 2005 issue (so the catalogue was...

Dunhill Blends - Murray-Orlik Transition Question

Amongst some vintage blend aficionados, we recently discussed tin design during the transition from Murray's to Orlik in 2005. A friend just aquired this specimen of Dunhill Flake: Clearly an Orlik tin, but it says "Manufactured in the UK". Were there any "leftovers" at Murray's that were...

Opening a 21 Year old tin of Skiff.

Great smoke. Skiff ages beautifully. I don't know who started the rumour that only Virginias do that and Lats don't.

    Favorite Factory Pipe Brands

I really like the smaller Danish brands: Bari, Bjarne, Svendborg, Nording. Best value for money. What really surprises me is that Savinelli ranges top in quality. I mean, they are beautiful and real classics, but I'm regularly disappointed of the poor quality of ebonite stems they were using.

I Suspect Most Of Us Are Not Average

I've also travelled a lot around in Europe (17 countries, 19 if you count Monaco and the Vatican), but never been to another continent. Red light district fun fact: I took a tour there with a really funny guide who explained that the average stay of a customer in a window takes no more than 6...

    Questions concerning tobacco

I have bought tobacco from at least 10 different users here. Not only that there weren't any complaints, most of the time I had really nice conversations. So I believe the strict and fair moderation pays off, there's really a bunch of good and honest people here.

    Favorite aromatic flavor

The world famous not-pineapple Murray's Erinmore flavour. I don't know if anyone knows the ingredients but surely STG doesn't.

    Buffer……What do you think?

I agree. I only use the buffer to refurbish estates and very ocasionally for vulcanite stems. I generally don't buff bowls.

    Buffer……What do you think?

Yes, same here. I grabbed myself a used grinder from eBay classifieds (€25), mounted it on a closet from the flea market (€10) which is handy because there I can store all materials, added a lamp (€10) and invested about €50 in waxes and pads. In the beginning it was difficult because the...

    Maltease Falcon tobacco

Dunno, until it's cool, couple of days maybe?

    Favorite alcohol for pipe cleaning/sweetening

Thank God my pipes don't know that :col: But there seems to be a real difference in cleaning habits - here in Old Europe everyone uses the stuff.

    Favorite alcohol for pipe cleaning/sweetening

No name 70% isopropanol, bought in 5 litre fuel containers from eBay 😅

New to me estate pipes! Newbie score!

I have a similar Savinelli pipe - also deluxe Milano with transparent stem, but 124KS shape - and found it to be really rare when I researched it. It is afaik the only series where Savinelli produces a transparent stem (this is more of a French habit, Chacom and BC have a lot in that...

    Maltease Falcon tobacco

The Maltese Falcon is a divine blend - under one condition: It needs to age a couple of years. I am lucky enough to have grabbed a couple of aged tins from a dear forum member, so given I am not too greedy it will last until my own stock has matured enough. Also stoving works nice. 5 hours at...

Experienced Pipers 20 Years+ Opinions on Definitive Blends

Just found this on a search and found it worth pushing I agree with most folks here that blends have changed so much over time that it's difficult. Also, I am more focused on European blends which gives a different perspective. But here we go: Aromatic: Also not much of an Aro smoker, but I...

Your Blend Of The Year 2022

My definite blend of the year (and unfortunately only for this year) is also the Palmetto Balkan (of which I received an unexpected supply by OP 🥰). A rediscovered blend, which I hadn't smoked in ages, that turned into an all-day this year is the HU Khoisaan.

Show us the Pipe that Started Your Smoking Adventure!

Recently I took some old paperwork from my parents' place, among them the receit for my first pipe! Purchade date August 14, 1996.

Cellaring: How Much is Too Much?

I would say I have a moderate cellar compared to other people here, and if I had known at the time I started what I know now, it would look completely different. There are some blends that improve so much with age that it is almost disappointing when you open a fresh tin. So instead of having...

    USPS New Question Added

Then it smells great :) My point is different, and I suppose it is not applicable to the US situation. In most European countries, you are, as a business, not allowed to sell a tobacco tin other than for the price on the tax stamp on the tin. So if I were, like for example PipeStud, to sell...

    USPS New Question Added

I see it as debating whether this behavior is legal or not. In my case, I only ship vintage tobacco. And noone so far could give me a solid explanation at which age a tin stops being taxable tobacco and starts being a collectible item. When the content can no longer be smoked? That would be...
