***What Are You Smoking, July 2024?***

HGL because I like the taste. This pipe because I'm trying to get it to color.

    Help Me Name This Blend

Twock. Simple and easy to spell. And I doubt the moderators here would have a problem with Twock showing up in the WAYS thread.

    Your First Briar

So once I got it in my head I wanted to smoke a pipe I went to the local B&M. I walked out with 2 ounces of tobacco, a cob, a briar, and pipe cleaners. It was a cheapo basket pipe, H.I.S. was the brand. You're ready for a briar once you know which end of the pipe to light.

    Turkish Latakia v. Cyprian Latakia

I've enjoyed quite a few 2 star blends. Sometimes you don't want a filet mignon, sometimes a greasy spoon cheeseburger is what hits at the time.

Blends To Start Your Friends On

I'd go either with a codger blend (or match) or an aromatic english. Something with taste but not exactly bold. Flavors they can taste when they're doing it right but not burn them if they - or rather when they- go too hard. Something universally pleasant. I'm not staying them out on a...

    Collecting Ethos

I'm definitely an assortment guy. I buy pipes based on "Hey! That looks cool!" I can see one day narrowing, or more properly further defining, my assortment into a collection. But to be perfectly and intellectually honest, I'm still having fun in the "Hey, that looks cool" phase.

Good and Bad Experiences Smoking in Public

I try not to leave my house. But those times I do, I'll have a pipe in my mouth where possible. I don't hear a whole lot of comments one way or the other. That's one of the upsides of tinnitus. The comments I do hear are fairly neutral. The common "My grandfather smoked a pipe", "Wow, you don't...

If you were already walking barefoot past the tobacconist 3/4 mile away, would you stop?

How Many Open Tins is Too Many?

It really depends on you. There's not many hard and fast rules here. I'd recommend jarring the open tins and having as many open as you'd like. At 2-4 smokes a day with a few open, I would personally be worried about the tobacco drying further than I like it before I could smoke it all. But...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2024?***

It's finally not brutally hot and humid outside! That calls for a celebration! My meerschaum is full of a John B Hayes aromatic called Spruce Stream. It tastes and smokes like a codger burley but slightly more aromatic. It goes pretty well with coffee.

Pipe Types and Why I Lean Towards Longstems

I like long pipes as well. But the only cooking effect I've personally experienced was looking much cooler while smoking them 😎. Although I'll admit I've never used a wooden stem.

Fun Things To Do With Empty Tobacco Tins

I use them for so many different things. Besides mini first aid kits*, sewing kits for Mrs. Rookie and my daughter, I use them the way my father and grandfather used baby food jars. Nails, screws, smaller drill bits or screwdriver bits, things like that. Eventually, hopefully sooner than later...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2024?***

This here is a MM Mark Twain full of Newminister Superior Navy Flake. It's already too humid out here. I'm enjoying this before the heat catches up.

    Traditional English Blends?

Another recommendation for Squadron Leader. Skiff Mixture is another great option. Any of Peter Stokkebye's offerings are pretty good as well. Sutliff's Aromatic English or Voodoo Queen are good if your tastes run to a more flavored English blend. Fox and Hound by one of Sutliff's alter egos is...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2024?***

Getting in some Squadron Leader before the heat and humidity drive me inside for the day.

How and Why do you Clench?

I clench. I just kind of set the bit in the tooth right next to my canine on my upper jaw and let it rest on my lower jaw. Everything stays nice and dry. I find it more comfortable than holding the pipe, and sometimes I need my hands.

    Cigars And Pipes...The Journey

Price was a huge consideration for me, but not the only one. With small children at home, finding time to smoke entire cigars was a challenge. I could sneak outside for maybe a half hour at a time before someone needed juice or the channel changed or something that requires an adult to be in the...

    The One Smoke Gentlemen

When I started smoking a pipe, it was worth the intention of finding that One Blend to some morning noon and night. 2 or 3 pipes and one tub of something was the goal. Was. I thought it would be like cigarettes, or maybe cigars. They're all kind of similar enough to try a few and pick my...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2024?***

It's finally lower than 93 degrees outside! I'm celebrating with some Squadron Leader in a meerschaum.

    Opening A Tin? Show Us!

Not really. You feel it more than taste it.
