World More Tobacco Day May 31

Oh yeah! That is coming up. Ok then. Looks like I'll be taking a trip to my local cigar store with lounge. Let's see how much tobacco I can use at one time. I'll have to bring in a tin of McCrystals and a pouch of Levi Garrett. But I should be able to pick up a house stick, bum a cigarette, and...

How Do You Evaluate The Risk?

I recently took a look at the health risks of my pipes and other hobbies/habits. For me (and for me only), it's a no brainer. Let's see, there's the motorcycle. My wife's entire family is quick to point out that is a huge health risk. And then the cigarettes I only very very recently quit. Those...

    Best Smoke Yet.

I'm glad to see J4 getting some love. It's a good mild blend to smoke, very well behaved in a cob. I'm happy it's coming together for you.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2024?***

Ribs over a 2:1 mix of apple to hickory wood. Oh! You mean in the pipe. Yeah, I should have guessed. Some nice 4 year old English Luxury in a well loved Morgan Bones

First Smoke on the New Porch!

Looks wonderful! There's something about a porch that makes a pipe hit different, better somehow. You're living the life.

    Let’s See Your SPDash

That's true, I do smoke a ton of Other. What can I say? Other makes some pretty darn fine blends.

    Warhorse Bar Green

That's it! That's that beautiful brownie I was taking about! The Licorice Lakeland. Grab a pinch and load it into a pipe you're ready to lose to an anise for the rest of its life in the best possible way.

    My First Taste of Orientals

I'm glad you are starting to find out about this wonderful little leaves! Those floral and incense flavors can sometimes really add a bit of complexity to the smoke.

    Warhorse Bar Green

Thanks for the tip. Tossing a tin in the cart now.

    Warhorse Bar Green

So a little while ago, I went on the hunt for blends that satisfy both Mrs. Rookie and myself. That's a fairly tall order. I'm getting myself off cigarettes. Yay me, I guess. But it means the blend has to have a fairly decent amount of nicotine for me to notice. And if I'm smoking tobacco, I'm...

    JimInks, I've Gotta Ask.

It took me a bit to decode his reviews. For a while, I would read his review while smoking the blend. After a while, by finding common descriptions of common leaves in multiple blends, I've come to figure out my understanding of his descriptions of taste and strength. Often for the life of me I...

There Was Once a Time I Loved Long Smokes

We who smoke pipe tobacco are lucky in one seemingly innocuous way. I've smoked half pipes or less many times. Often waiting a full day or more before returning to the half pipe left. Would it work for you to fill a smaller pipe and only stay with it for like 15 minutes at a time?

What Tobacco did your Ancestors Smoke?

When I first started smoking a pipe in my car, it was pouches of Carter Hall. After about a month, we went on vacation. Shreveport we got back home and I hopped in my car to go somewhere, I noticed it smelled exactly like my grandfather's car. I got in touch with some aunts and uncles to find...

Fun Experiment - Pipe Tobacco Smoked Alphabetically

That's such an interesting idea! I wish I had that kind of dedication. Also, I saw Old Ironsides. What is it and who makes it? That tin art tells me it makes no difference, I'm getting some anyways.

Five Brothers to Pep Things Up!!

I've used it to punch up various cherry blends that Mrs. Rookie loves the room note of. My thought is if I'm smoking cherry flavored tobacco (which carries a taste very similar to childhood medicine), I'm going to at least get some vitamin N from it. Shag cut mixed with ribbon can be challenging...

    Matches vs. Lighters: Any Difference?

While I have a nice Zippo, for me is a cheap disposable Bic. That's for no other reason than I always have one on me in a pocket wherever I go. I love them for the same reason I like Missouri Meerschaum. Bits are the cobs of lighters I've always felt.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2024?***

Some 4 year old C&D Sea Dog in a little carved meerschaum. A pleasant smoke in a cheery little pipe.

Show Off Your Meerschaum Pipes Here!

My wife got me this little meerschaum for my last birthday at the end of April. I don't know anything about it, other than it's a tiny little thing. But I've still been having fun smoking it and watching it color.(thumb for scale) So far it's been about 2 months of one to three bowls a day of...

    Too Hot & Goes Out

I had the same problem for quite while. I was packing too tight, resulting in me puffing like it was a cigarette trying to keep the bowl lit. What I did was try switching tobaccos, pipes, packing, and cadence all at once, changing everything with every smoke. Obviously that didn't work. My...
