    Sublime Tobacco - Compton Mackenzie

A nice reminder that our posts are all messages in bottles. We never know when or if they’ll be found.

    A long lunch today

I remember trying Babycham decades ago. After drinking some I threw up a little in my mouth. Is that normal?

    A long lunch today

When I was in high school in the seventies we were connoisseurs, and greatly preferred choice vintages of Blue Nun and Giacobazzi to Boone’s Farm.

    A long lunch today

I just went to my 40th grad school reunion a couple of weeks ago. I enjoyed seeing old friends (at least those not otherwise occupied being dead) but the food was execrable. Clearly I should have joined you & your friends instead.

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

The systematic misinformation for Astley’s is more subtle and difficult to tease out, but yes, Astley’s origin story is similarly misleading. But this kind of thing was a commonplace in the British pipe & pipe tobacco world and is more the rule than the exception.

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

Twarn't me Al. Offhand I forget who had that forum name, if I ever knew. On the general topic of this pipe I have a ton of information about Wally Frank and his business and can add a little to this conversation. Wally Frank pipes are a hornet's nest; their name is attached to 181 models...

Yeah, a lot of money for sure. But for a unicorn you pay up or miss out. This was clearly someone's unicorn.

    Show Us Your Loewe Pipes

Good question. I have no idea but strongly suspect in Victorian and Edwardian England at least proximity didn’t matter very much. Back then mail was delivered a staggering 6 to 12 times each day. You could wrote a note in the morning inviting someone to lunch and get the reply before noon...

    Show Us Your Loewe Pipes

I can’t remember if I posted this before but for future reference the approximate address chronology is: -Pre-1862 to 1911: 62 Haymarket -1912 through 1962: 58 Haymarket -1963 through 1968: 66 Haymarket -1969 onward: 3 Eldon Way, Spa Road, Hockley, Essex (just outside Southend-on-Sea...

Yes, it didn’t change from 62 to 58 until 1912.

    A beauty. What’s the Haymarket address, I assume 62?

    No Luck with Hallmark

I agree, the date code is 1907 and the assay location Glasgow. The Glasgow assay office closed over 60 years ago, and while many records are gone some survive. The answer to who did the silver work and sold the pipe is still Joseph Cohen & Son of Glasgow. They registered identical makers...

    No Luck with Hallmark

By the time your pipe was made Morris (~1839-1906) was dead and his widow Ada (~1852-1936) was carrying on the business. Morris’s father, Joseph Cohen (~1811-1878) founded the business as a Glasgow tobacco shop.

How can a pipe sell for $5,610?

Al it’s really a lot more than that after you factor in the cost of a divorce. More seriously if I was going to spend that kind of money I’d look for a Sixten Peewit. After recovering from having sold one of my kidneys.

How can a pipe sell for $5,610?

Very true. But value is a slippery and highly personal concept. I’ve heard tell that people have spent much more for a piece of old canvas with some paint smeared on it.
