Rim Adornment On Ser Jacopo Leonardo

Thanks. That’s an interesting discussion. Whether this is true or not, this quote is interesting: “Leonardo da Vinci devised a twin-walled terracotta pipe which was cooled by the air circulating in the cavity.”

    Carmel Pipe Shop

Pipe maker Kraig Sederquist posted a few photos on Instagram today of the iconic Carmel Pipe Shop in California. I’ve added it to my bucket list. I found an old 2013 thread on this site about the shop and am glad to see it is still going strong.

Rim Adornment On Ser Jacopo Leonardo

Are the beautiful metal rim inserts on these SJ Leonardo pipes simply aesthetic, or did it help cool the bowl?

Farewell Sutliff Tobacco Company - Monday 3/4/25

Sutliff had just celebrated its 175th Anniversary and was profitable and innovative. I’ve visited the plant. To close the facility and give 40 American employees pink slips a month before Christmas is a decision the foreign Danish owners will have to live with. And since they did nearly the same...

    Tobacco Industry Recent Strength

Yep, and there is also this quote from Buffet when he invested in RJR Reynolds: "I'll tell you why I like the cigarette business," he said. "It costs a penny to make. Sell it for a dollar. It's addictive. And there's fantastic brand loyalty."

    Tobacco Industry Recent Strength

I'm not sure if the "entire market would fail," but I do agree that if aromatics were banned there would be a lot of us codgers calling their congressmen.

    Tobacco Industry Recent Strength

“Recovery potential lies in product innovation, cost control, and easing operational disruptions.” Hmmm. As far as the smaller pipe tobacco segment of the market is concerned, I think an argument can be made that Laudisi is out maneuvering STG on at least two of these three: innovation and...

A true unicorn blend. Enjoy, brother!

    Cleaning Blocked Pipe ?

A straight piece of galvanized baling wire (maybe 12 gauge or so) run through the shank usually loosens up a difficult clog. Then a tapered pipe cleaner. In rare cases, I‘ve also used a long drill bit attached to a hand held pin vise drill chuck (it’s like a screwdriver handle) which you can...

    Brazilian Pipe Makers, Anyone?

At the Chicago Pipe Show, two Brazilian pipe makers really impressed me: Luiz Lavos and Emiliano. Here are two of their pipes I purchased. The Lavos billiard has a silver accent and the Emiliano bamboo has an exotic wood adornment. Just incredible detailing and they smoke great, too. Both of...

***What Are You Smoking, June 2025?***

Smoking some Savinelli Jupiter in a long stem Adam Davidson apple that arrived today. I saw this pipe on Adam’s table at the Chicago Pipe Show and when I got home regretted not having purchased it. Luckily, it was still available.

    Wind Caps for Cooler Smoking?

I have long been a big fan of windcaps, including having a NYC pipe shop install one on the first “good“ pipe I bought on a visit there around 1988. Now I use them for a more utilitarian purpose: to make sure a hot ember does not fly out and burn a hole in a pair of my suit pants.

    Jim's Briarworks Smokehouse Review.

I ended up buying a few jars. I opened one, spread it out in the tobacco tray and rejarred it for a month. I’m smoking it today for the first time and am a bit underwhelmed. I love the tin note and the cut, but it is a bit mild for palate. I was hoping it would taste as smoky as it smells. It’s...

If you will be in the Charleston, WV area, I strongly recommend you stop at this pipe shop: The Squire Tobacconist - http://www.thesquirewv.com/

***What Are You Smoking, June 2025?***

I decided to smoke the last of this jarred Plum Pudding in two long-stemmed classics: a smooth billiard stamped from the iconic Wally Frank shop in NYC, and one by the great Tim West of Columbus, Ohio.

I Hope You Hate Deoxidizing Vulcanite Stems As Much As I Do

You did a great job. I try to wipe down any vulcanite stem each time I use the pipe and add some obsidian oil to avoid oxidation. I lean towards SEM vulcanite now in my new pipes. SEM is known for its resistance to hazing and discoloration. My teeth just don’t agree with acrylic as I get older.

Former’s flake stuffed in a large capacity Tim Beaumont Pappa Bear egg. Tim has been using a lot of soft stem material that I love for clenching. SEM Vulcanite is known for its resistance to hazing and discoloration.

***What Are You Smoking, June 2025?***

Loaded up my go-to Drucquer & Sons Loch Ness by GLP in a Tom Eltang canted Apple with what I call his “dinosaur spine” carving. When I saw the pipe in Chicago I immediately wanted it, but alas when I reached for my wallet I realized I had left it in my hotel room. Tom’s wife Pia, who I had never...

***What Are You Smoking, May 2025?***

Radice pipes might give the most bang for the buck of all the Italian factory pipes. I really love them.

Some C&D House Reserve in a pencil stem Ser Jacopo Spongia. The House Reserve blend is sold only in brick and mortar stores and cannot be purchased online. It was a little bonus to shops for selling the C&D line.
