    Bad Good Advice

More moisture = more water, less tobacco for your money. Some moisture, however, is reported to help with aging. I have definitely gotten some soggy englishes. Sutliff Count Pulaski comes to mind, as my bulk portion was practically dripping when I opened the bag; as wet as any aromatic gooper...

    Bad Good Advice

Drying tobacco is weird. Non-aromatics can be more flavorful after drying, though not always. Aromatics tend to lose their topping (and often, most of their flavor) after drying, unless the underlying tobacco is of good quality, in which case diminishing the toppings may be desirable. Some...

    Bad Good Advice

I struggled as a beginner with excessive relights. All advice pointed to packing more loosely. I did that and continued to struggle. It turned out that I was already packing too loosely. I started packing the tobacco more firmly, particularly the top layer of the bowl, and as if by magic, I...

    Cursed Pipe Won't Smoke

They're vintage stummels, so that may account for it. I wouldn't buy another tbh, but the one I have was easy enough to fix to my liking.

I was Going Through a Box of Old Cobs

I try to steer people away form those burnout-prone hunks of crap whenever I see them mentioned. Why would anyone bother when the real deal is just a few dollars more?

I was Going Through a Box of Old Cobs

When I started just a few years ago in 2018, a Missouri Pride cob or Ozark hardwood could each be had for under $5. I think I paid $6 for my first pipe, a Legend. Insanely good deals for real, proper pipes made in the US. They are still a good value IMHO, even as the prices have crept up. I'm...

    Cursed Pipe Won't Smoke

Opening the airway is an easy mod that could be done in a couple of minutes with a good, sharp drill bit and some pliers. There's not much to lose by attempting it.

    Cursed Pipe Won't Smoke

The comments about the draft hole are spot on. I have one of these briars made by Old German Clay, and the first thing I noticed when I got it is that the draw is very restricted because the draft hole is TINY. With a more restricted draw, you need to pack more loosely, and the opposite is also...

    A Sad Feeling

Unfortunately, Latakia doesn't agree with me these days, so I don't have any recommendations there.

    Virginia RR recommendations

I recommend Amphora Virginia, if it's available to you.

    A Sad Feeling

Don't be sad that it's over, be glad that it happened, or something like that. 10lb is a respectable stash. You just have to find something similar-ish to help stretch your supply.

    A Sad Feeling

It's sad to see options dwindling, and there are definitely some Sutliff and MacBaren blends I'll miss. I hope to see more of Laudisi stepping up to fill that void. They already got that ball rolling with the Rivertown blends.

    Building Dust in Pipes

Denatured alcohol is industrial grade ethanol with chemical additives to make it unpalatable and/or undrinkable. I would use strong, beverage grade ethanol (or alternatively, medical isopropyl alcohol) before using denatured alcohol. Who knows what's in it, and you don't want that in your pipes.

    Building Dust in Pipes

I'd do a full "reset" on the pipes. Remove any cake, salt and alcohol treatment, clean and polish, and then smoke the crap out of them with a very robust tobacco until the foulness is fully exorcized. The mortise will need extra attention when cleaning.

***What Are You Smoking, April 2025?***

Enjoyed this fine morning on the deck with black coffee and some McConnell's Red Virginia in a sandblasted Ropp J06.

Why Are There So Few Burley Flakes Available?

Anecdotal: Burley seems to be generally underappreciated and treated as a "lesser" tobacco as compared to the more fashionable Virginia. Less demand, fewer products available. I've seen more comments akin to "I don't smoke burley" than I have regarding any other base tobacco. Personally, I love...

Anybody Else Mashed the "Complete Order" too Soon?

Nah, I always double check my cart before finalizing a purchase.

    The B & M Is Dead, Long Live The B & M

You never know what you'll find. Cigar shops will sometimes have a few tins. Surprisingly, one of the smoke shops near me that specializes more in glass pipes actually had some decent tins and pouches when I checked on a whim. SPC, Amphora, Peterson, and of course, Captain Black. I stocked up on...

    Bulk Drying Tin Tobacco

If you dry an aromatic, it's likely that the toppings will diminish significantly as the tobacco dries. This might be a good thing if you want to tone down any top flavors. I feel that it's a fair price to pay to make flame retardant aromatics more smokable.

Reviews have helped me to get an idea of what's similar to what I've already tried and liked and what I want to try next. It's subjective, but it usually gets me in the ballpark.
