Th black might just be a protective carbon coating. If so, you don't need it to protect the pipe if you break it in slowly. It also doesn't hurt to leave it in. Review of SG Cannon Plug - A Lakeland Legend
I find cannon plug, Grousemoor and Ennerdale all to be of the same bent flavor wise. If you like one, you should like the others. None of them have a discernable rose geranium note (e.g., Kendal flake, Bosun plug, etc.), which I find to be more polarizing.- pinem

Meerschaum pipes are the way to go in windy situations. They can absorb the excess moisture from a fast burn better, and won't burn out.
