Is Pipe Smoking Something That Grows on You?

That makes sense -- as I posted in my advice, the light sip is what reveals the tobacco's taste. I suppose drawing through your nose, you still draw lightly from your mouth as well. The hard thing about the light sip (or the nose draw you describe) is actually keeping the darn thing lit and...

Is Pipe Smoking Something That Grows on You?

I forget where I learned it, but it seems to help with avoiding moisture build-up as well. Without thinking, I often exhale thru the pipe a tad just before a draw, which at least seems to keep relights down for me. You'd think it makes the pipe hotter, but done subtly and gently, it seems to...

Is Pipe Smoking Something That Grows on You?

All good advice here. I'll add this: As soon as your tobacco seems to be turning unpleasant, sit the pipe down and forget about for a while (a half hour, say). When you go back to it, light it quickly, just enough to get it going (it will start up easily), and SIP. You should notice the tobacco...

    Latakia Paradox?

Agreed. I got back into latakia with Old Joe Krantz Red Label. It has a trace of latakia, but is primarily burley, va, and perique. Think Old Joe Krantz with a splash of latakia. Over time, I noticed I started craving a bowl of that per day, eventually started liking heavier latakia blends...

    Filtered Pipes

I have a Savinelli I smoke with the adapter (I don't like filters of any kind). It's fine with the adapter, and for me, too open of a draw without it. If you bought it new, your Savinelli should have come with an adaptor (just a little plastic tube that fits in). If you don't have one, you...

***What Are You Smoking, Sept. 2020?

Irish Flake in a Chacom Spigot with coffee.

A Truly Different Kind Of English?

I think Bow Legged Bear is a truly different kind of English.

    Modern "Codger Style" Blends?

Yes I think Briar Fox fits that bill nicely.

Plug And Rope That Are Not Elusive?

LOL. Well, you gotta slice it, true. It's more like an unsliced roll of say, Escudo.

Plug And Rope That Are Not Elusive?

I just ordered Peter Heinrichs Curly Block today on smokingpipes, which I believe fits the ropes and plugs definition.

Plug And Rope That Are Not Elusive?

It is still easily available. Some sites do throttle it, limiting the number of purchases per day, but I've had no problem getting it in 2020.

Plug And Rope That Are Not Elusive?

...and you could add Jacknife Plug to that list. I've been cellaring all three.

    Becoming A Codger

Five Brothers in a cob with coffee is part of my morning routine :)

    A Little Sunday Scene

I believe that's a D'Jeep lighter. They're disposable butane, like Bic lighters. I used to see them in convenience stores at the counter, but haven't seen one in a while now.

***What Are You Smoking, Sept. 2020?

C&D Sea Dog in a Peterson Dracula. I'm starting to get my latakia palate back, so I decided to try to kick it up a notch. So far enjoying it. Chosen because of the burley base, which may be unusual, but I'm a burleyphile, so I thought it'd help.

Pipe Rotation; Yes, No, Maybe So?

I'm in category 2. I try not to smoke one twice in a row, or more than three times in a day, but I have no formal rotation process (other than once in a while I do a mass rotation of them all with pipes in my cellar).

    Your Favorite Navy Flake

    True that ;)
  18. --dante--

    Your Favorite Navy Flake

Okay, I can see going by the cut, at least for starters :)

    Your Favorite Navy Flake

Then that makes the question "what's your favorite navy flake?" ludicrous. My answer would be "orange" ;) If we can't define it, why refer to it? Don't take me too seriously, but we have an odd hobby in that we can't even define our own products that we are enthused with. English...

    Your Favorite Navy Flake

To me...a navy would have to be what a sailor back in the day took with him -- so plug or rope. The rum casing makes sense as well, because -- sailors, rum ,sea chantys, etc. I'd just like to hear some advice on what an actual navy blend/tobacco (I won't use the term flake) is.
