    I have worked as a field ecologist since the 80s and many of my jobs were to census T&E birds to develop management and recovery plans. These days my work is aquatic in nature and I only bird for fun.

    Orley, I agree that Grousemoor is perfect s it is but to shake up things and give my palate a break from Latakia, I like to experiment. Another good combo is Rattray's Exotic Orange and Grousemoor in a 3:1 mix.

    Workman, my current jar is 3 yrs old and had been sitting quietly at the back of my cellar. It is darker and more earthy now. It is one of the few Lakelands that appeals to me.

    Blends with cigar leaves

    Russ, do you use all of those tobaccos in the same manner or do they have characteristics that you use for specific purposes? For instance, Billy Budd is a creamy, buttery blend and while it does not scream cigar, you can tell it is there. My favorite blend by far.

    I mixed these 2:1 Grousemoor to Top Black Cherry. It produced a complimentary and smooth smoke...sorta a herbal lemon cherry. Worth a try for those that like the Lakeland approach but not Grandma's perfume.

    The lacquer technique that the Japanese artisans use is beautiful. But, if they use urushi, and you are sensitive to urushoil (poison Ivy, oak, etc), don't bother. I had a fountain pen made using urushi and celluloid ... Had to sell it as my hands would swell when I used it.

    If you think you will like the blend, smoke it. If you are not sure, find a similar blend and see if you like that. If not, take some sucker for unreasonable amounts of money.

    Great advice. I have never used the reel for anything more than a line holder. Put money into the rod and line. And fly tying gear.
