New Pipe Boxes
I don't store the pipes in their boxes but I may when I build a pipe shelf. Always keep the box and the bag. The pipe keeps its resell value better if you have the original stuff it came with. -

Piggybacking onto my previous comment. If you're open to estate pipes I'd go with Willmer or Lane-Era Charatan. Both are big pipes that have amazing briar (better than Dunhill imo). They also won't break when dropped. Shit I was buffing one of mine on a wheel and shot it clear across the room... -

The grooves could be used to create a "fin" to help with heat transfer. More surface area interacting with the ambient air around the pipe would keep the top of the bowl slightly cooler for more comfortable handling. The grooves would have to be significant to provide any relevant cooling... -

Estate Pipes on eBay
I sell pipes on Ebay and I clean my pipes pretty well before I send them out. That said, I'd agree that it is best to clean the pipes you buy to your own standards.
