Is Your Tobacco Cellar Large Enough to Outlive You?

Absolutely not, and with the prices of tins in Canada I won't be buying my way there soon. I do grow though, so I'll probably end up with quite a bit at some point. But I already find my 20 or so jars of leftover bought tins to be too much to keep track of. I'd love to be the guy with a pound...

    Enlarge Pipe's Airway?

I've done it before with a pipe that had a slotted bit and it restricted the draw. Just used really small drill bits and a cordless drill. Didn't even use a vice. Just held it in my hand. Better to have the bit slightly smaller than the opening and just move the drill around sort of reaming it...

    Pricey Pipes.

I kind of prefer the well loved pipes that gramps chewed on for years....dont think much would change if I could afford something really pricey. But that's how I am with anything I buy. I like well used, well loved things that tell a story.

***What Are You Smoking? February 2020.***

I'm away from home so it's been -Black XX -Ashton artisans blend - Irish twist Sometimes spiced up with mconnells pure perique I picked up about 20 pipes while in Europe at flea markets so I've been trying them out before I sell them.

    Pipe Rotation or Random Use?

I choose based on type of blend and length of smoke. Then I have pipes for home use(meers, clays, bigger and fragile pipes) and if I'm out then it's usually smaller, beater or cobs.

About as simple/ghetto as it gets.

    Best Pipe for Clenchers?

I agree with the Bent, short and light pipes, but I do find having a slimmer bit helps. When something is a bit chunky and the jaw has to be held a little open I find it more demanding. The slimmest bit I have ever seen is my Dr Boston bulldog and it's amazing.

    How Often Do You Tamp?

+1 Yep. The "how often?" Question really depends on a few factors. Cut, moisture, blend, pipe, pressure. I prefer to tamp often, but lightly, sometimes it's just to even out the top of the ash and not really pressing down very much.

    How to Detect Good Briar?

So lighter wood generally means higher quality? I have an old unsmoked hardcastle billiard that feels very light for its size.

    Planting Some Tobacco This Spring

Nice. Well burley is a good place to start and rustica is also easy to harvest and dry as you can just hang the whole plant up when the time comes. Leaves will be much stronger at the top of the plant, so it's good to keep that in mind when blending and bagging when everything is dry. I would...

    Planting Some Tobacco This Spring

Start the seeds 4-6 weeks before the last frost date of your area. If you are a little(few weeks) late, it shouldn't be that much of a issue in your area. I suggest to do a few sowings(once per week) incase a tray doesn't germinate properly. Keep a lid on your tray in a warm and lit place and...

Unopened WW2 Half & Half Tin

Wow. Ya if there isn't any mold inside, I'm sure it's a nice mellow smoke. Depends how much $ it is...at least worth the price of a new tin! Haha

Meerschaum Lined. Best Of Both Worlds? Or, "Drawbacks Of Both Materials"?

A meer lined bowl would be good to ad to the collection. If you like it then I'm sure adding a full meer in the future wouldn't be a problem either. Meer is very durable and would have no issue being smoked constantly but as another member said, it might be the briar shank which will get a bit...

    I've Been Busy!

EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title (See Rule 9) - Bob I picked up a bunch(about 25) of estate pipes on my recent travels to europe from antique and flea markets. I've been restoring them and cleaning then up over the past few days since I have some time on my hands. Some nice gems in here...

    Ashton Artisan's Blend.

Yep it's a nice blend for sure. I found it sweet and smooth. Not overly smoky or musty. The perique is very subtle for me, which I don't mind, as I tend to throw a pinch of perique in a lot of blends. I find this blend is great on its own, but now that I think of it, I might try it with a...

    Greetings from British Columbia

Oh nice! Well ya I do have a bunch of pipes I'm restoring, if you are looking. Not to expensive, just paying for the cost and a bit for my time to restore them. I can send you some info if you are interested. I am also bringing them to the Vancouver pipe club, which I have decided to join, at...

    Which Side of The Mouth?

I switch it up often. Better for the tongue and get a slight variation in flavour with different mouth position.
