Mixing Cigar Leaf With Golden Virginia And Some Perique

Well for a cigar smoker it might not be enough!! Haha. It sounds like you are narrowing it down at least. It depends on their tastes. I would personally up the perique to 10% and put the cigar at 15%. But if you want the perique at 5% I'd do 20% cigar. It all depends. With cigar leaf at 10% and...

Calling Out on IMCO Owner for Advice

I have a new made in asia IMCO. My wick is stuffed in at the top of the cotton, I've never changed it as I just got the thing not too long ago. Mine stays full for about a week or so. The cotton doesn't seem anything fancy, could you not just use a cotton ball if you need more stuffing? Mine...

    The Evolution of Pipe Smokers?

Well the evolution may not happen to everyone, but it does happen to many a pipe smoker still. I was drawn in by the sweet smell of the aromatics until I had a mind blowing experience with a smoky english blend. Most of all it takes time to appreciate and fully understand tobaccos and develop a...

How Do You Avoid Cake In Meerschaum?

I don't get the dry paper towel thing as if I just dry wipe I still get cake buildup after a while. I fold a pipe cleaner in half and dry wipe, then wet the pipe cleaner a little and rub the inside of the bowl with it, using my finger in the bowl and a fair bit of pressure and rubbing until it...

Do You Ever Re-clean Your Pipes Before Smoking

Yep sometimes I'll bristle out the shank before a bowl. I don't really have a "cleaning day", just soft pipe cleaner after a smoke. So the only time I'm thinking about how long it's been since I bristled is when I pick up the pipe for a smoke.

How Much Tobacco You Buy on Each Order

I am up in canada and I order whole leaf from the states. Usually 2-4lbs at a time. Costs about 75-150$ usd shipped. A couple lbs lasts 2-3 months.

So, I've Been Using Lambs Navy Rum to Clean...

Yep I use 80-90 proof sprits to clean my pipes. The same ones I use for drinking and making casing/ topping as well(rum or bourbon) I think the do the job just fine and I like the smell/taste it leaves behind for the next bowl.

    Blending Experimentation

Sounds good! I do alot of stoving and blending using whole leaf. As for casing and topping I keep it pretty simple these days, mostly mixing maple syrup or molasses in black spiced rum or bourbon. I like to soak ground up tonka beans in the bourbon for a week or so and then , spray that on the...

    All The Strong (Nic) Blends

Keep going! I did it gradually over a few months, cutting down more and more until it was one cig a day and then none. Haven't looked back since! It was that first smoke of the day cigarette that was the hardest to let go. I just forced myself to have a pipe and eventually didn't crave the cig...

    British 'Dark-Fired Virginia'

Glad you are enjoying the thread, it's an interesting topic. While dark fired va and dark kentucky are both virginias, they still could be different varieties, which have different characteriaics and flavours. (More floral or earthy or sweet or whatever). Similar yes, but the same maybe not...

    British 'Dark-Fired Virginia'

Well the kentucky I buy from wholeleaftobacco says the "VA 309(kentucky) is a cross between VA 312 and Lizard Tail Orinoco" Orinoco is a old type of tobacco from which the modern virginia tobaccos originated. It's quite strong and the lizard tail variety is alot milder and considered a bright...

    Lack of Taste from Pipe?

As hoosierpipeguy suggested, maybe try to build a little cake or have a few smokes in it before you wipe the bowl.

    Straight Grain: Better Heat Transfer/Conduction

Am I reading this incorrectly? It says :" r example, the thermal conductivity of pine in the direction of the grain is 0.22 W/moC, and perpendicular to the grain 0.14 W/moC" I think the higher number means better conductivity. Correct me if I'm wrong though! I just seen a few members...

    Golden Age of Pipe Making

I think the master pipemakers of the past had to put in alot more work to have their work very well known. It's alot easier now to put yourself and pipes "out there". That being said, I think the level of standard for a factory pipe has gone up(aside from the cheap knockoff crap), with...

***What Are You Smoking, October 2020?***

Whole leaf. Threw together a mix this morning of jars a had on the shelf. Thought I would spice up the black stoved kentucky twist I have been smoking. 60% black stoved kentucky with a spray of tonka bourbon. Shag cut. 25% black stoved red virginia. Ribbon. 15% latakia. Ribbon. The straight...

    Straight Grain: Better Heat Transfer/Conduction

So......scientific proof? Looks as though straight grain pipes will transfer heat better than other types of grain.. well it's not specifically talking about briar though. I do realize many people have argued against this point(and continue to! Haha) and I'm not saying straight grain pipes...

Do You Believe In The Cake? Yes or No

Well possibly the carbon layer is a better conductor of heat?

    Straight Grain: Better Heat Transfer/Conduction

I've noticed on my straight grain pipes that they tend to heat up a little faster than my pipes without 100% straight grain. The heat is also distributed more evenly, with less "hot spots", which seems to happen on some pipes where a portion or area of the pipe might tend to heat up more than...
