***What Are You Smoking, December 2020?***

Whole leaf blend. Experimenting with a sort of va/ky/or with a touch of latakia. Was going for a sort of walnut(or bald headed teacher) thing, but I haven't tried those. Maybe like a kentucky based English with such a small amount of lat to only enhance the richness and give a slight woodsy...

The Most Popular Pipe Tobacco.... 50 Years Ago.

I think Clan has that sort of classic old timey pleasant pipe smell. I wouldn't suggest smoking it unless you want to see you tongue go up in flames though.

    Tobacco Calculations

Weighing it is the best option(cheap microgram scales on amazon) I frequently weigh small amount when mixing and testing new blends and often mix up a bowls worth or maybe 5g with percentages of various leaf down to 5% or less. And average bowl with an average pipe(.75 inch x 1.5 inch) is about...

***What Are You Smoking, December 2020?***

Whole leaf blend. Va/ky/per ribbon cut. 20% stoved red virginia 20% black stoved bright virginia 20% kentucky 20% perique 10% (unstoved) red virginia 10% (unstoved) bright virginia Didn't want to get a crazy with complicated percentages and the result is great. Only mixed up one bowl but I...

***What Are You Smoking, November 2020?***

Whole leaf blend. Something simple with strength is often what I feel like at the end of the day. Reset the taste buds a little from analyzing/ enjoying more complex blend experiments during the day. 50% kentucky 50% bright virginia Ribbon cut. Through an Altinay lattice meer billiard.

***What Are You Smoking, November 2020?***

Whole leaf. A spicy evening blend. Ribbon cut. 30% kentucky 20% perique 25% black stoved bright virginia 25% red virginia 5% latakia (This adds up to 105%, thats how spicy it is! Ha actually I added a little extra perique and didn't want to do the math) Dark, tangy, a little fruity and of...

    Latakia Percentages

Yep sometimes less is more! I am guilty of abusing of perique as I do like things spicy and strong usually and I've experimented with lat bombs, but grow tired of those quickly and now I'm really into using subtle amount of latakia to add richness instead of smokyness. I'm smoking a...

    Latakia Percentages

Yep that's what I do with the tonka beans, although maybe a week is better for a full exttaction. Give it a shake every day or two . I would say maybe not a spiced rum(straight run or bourbon or something)to get the pure flavour of the tonka bean and you could mix with a spiced rum later. I go...

Whole Leaf Tobacco for the Tobacco Apocalypse

Yep it's a great idea! Playing with blending and whole leaf will really expand your knowledge(and taste buds) of tobacco. It takes lots of trial and error but honestly only gets better and better. Here in canada it can be almost 10 times! the price to buy tins vs whole leaf , so I was...

    Latakia Percentages

That's interesting. With orientals it seems like there can be quite a difference in flavour depending on growing regions and conditions, there are also probably many varieties of basma leaf as well, which could make a big difference. I find the basma from whole leaf is light airy floral notes...

    Latakia Percentages

I haven't tried any of their casings. If I do use casing I mostly stick to bourbon/spiced rum, maple syrup, molasses and tonka beans(soaked in alcohol) but yes you can just spray before pressing, warming up the leaf a little helps to soak in a bit better(especially with ribbon cut blends) but...

***What Are You Smoking, November 2020?***

Whole leaf blend. Ribbon cut vaper. 45% stoved red virginia 20% stoved bright virginia 22% perique 13% black stoved bright virginia. Trying to nail that tangy but still earthy vaper. Getting closer. Through a full bent everest briar.

    Latakia Percentages

I've only tried the prelip and basma. I was considering katerini but I'll wait a bit and and get to know the prelip a little more. I saw leaf only had it and others which might be nice, but I to had a bad experience with their virginia and burley a few years ago so I only shop wholeleaftobacco...

    Sutliff Matured Red Virginia 515-RC

Good luck with your blending experiments! A big game changer for me was stoving the whole leaf virginias I get from whole leaf. Even a few hours can really make a virginia come alive with those sweet/fruity/tangy notes that you get in alot of commercial blends.

    Latakia Percentages

Awesome, glad I could help and good luck with the blend! For a press I've tried lots of homemade inventions like the pvc pipe and c clamp style but this noodle press is the best and easiest. Just get it and save yourself the trouble. It makes a nice size plug and you can easily fit 2oz of...

    Latakia Percentages

I personally like a good oriental presence in my English blends so I go with 10% and up to 15% for an oriental forward blend. Beyond 15% it's going to be quite spicy and will start to mask the latakia. 5-10% adds a light aromatic dimension but still keeps the other tobaccos as the focus. I don't...

    Latakia Percentages

10% is mild and adds a richness to the other tobaccos of a blend, but not necessarily a smokyness. 15% is getting a little smoky, still mostly adding richness again, but you can definitely tell it's there. 20-25% this would be more of a mild to medium english. It's definitely smoky and starts...

    Tasting - How To?

Aromatics are definitely a tricky one. I personally don't smoke many of them. It took me a good 6 months of a few bowls a day( very occasionally for years before that) to really be able to pick out and describe all the flavours. For a foodie like yourself you probably know that a large part is...

***What Are You Smoking, November 2020?***

Whole leaf blend. I mixed a couple of my blends(a vaper ribbon and a va/ky/or flake together to attempt something like macbarens acadian perique (which I haven't tried) 12.5% perique 31.5% stoved red virginia 9% stoved bright virginia 18% black stoved red and bright Virginia 20% kentucky 9%...
