I have a small DMT stick file to true the edge of knives as I use them and a set of stones for redoing edge geometry if the knife gets super dull or the edge gets nicked/damaged.
The answer to this is varied with few clear cut boundaries. My opinion:
Straight English: PS Proper English, GLP Quiet Nights
Scottish is English with cavendish such as MM 965
Balkan is English with oriental tobaccos such as Super Balkan, PS English Oriental Supreme
Syrian is English with...
Really depends on the blend. PS LBF, LNF, and Cube Cut benefit from a couple of years aging. Black Frigate, Quiet Nights, and PS english blends are great fresh. Most "plug" blends I like to leave for at least a year for the flavors to "meld" a bit.
With Staghorn Sumac the new growth has a "fuzz" on it hence the name. Poison Sumac the leaves are very similar to Staghorn but with the new growth the stems are smooth.
I have 10-12 jars in my rotation. Usually around 3 latakia blends, a couple of VaPers, a Virginia, a plug, a couple burley based blends and an aromatic or 2. That way whenever the mood strikes I have something right at hand.
Mama and her 2 grown kittens take care of our rodent issues. Living in a old farmhouse plenty of mice move in when it starts to get cold out. That's when the 3 way soccer games start with the mouse "volunteering" to be the ball.
Some blends really sing in certain pipes. I have a cob dedicated to Black Frigate and another for Crooner for this reason. Frequently I have several pipes for latakia blends and others for virginias or burleys. Experiment and see what works for you.
