    First restoration

I bought a Chacom Festival Rhodesian (815) from eBay for cheap, and I attempted my first restoration. I didn’t take “before” photos myself, but here are the shots from eBay: The stem was completely browned with oxidation, and while the rest looked okay it seemed cloudy with patina. After a lot...

    Latakia

It seems “musty” to me. I will try again in six months.

    Latakia

I’m still learning what I like in a tobacco blend, but I’m beginning to think I don’t like Latakia. I’ve tried blends with more (Larry’s Blend) and less (Early Morning Pipe), and had similar displeasure with each. I do like the Early Morning Blend except for what I think is the Latakia flavor...

    Estate Pipe Acquisitions

I might. My main concern is that, never having done this before, I would ruin the pipe. I might do one of the others in the box before tackling this one. Or, since I really like this one I may ask a pro to do it and take my time learning on the others.

    Estate Pipe Acquisitions

I recently purchased a walnut pipe rack from a guy locally, and the sale included his dad's old pipes. There were several old cob pipes, some from Irvin S. Cobb (H&B). Others need restoration and/or a deep cleaning, but my favorite piece was a Celius Bishop (12) Freehand pipe, images below. The...

    Pipe style

I am still learning about different pipe styles. What style is this pipe? I tried to get it on eBay but lost. But I like the look of it—what should I search for to find a similar shape if not the same brand?

    Whiskey Cavendish

I’ve tried a number of tobaccos (Early Morning, My Mixture 965, Captain Black (white and dark), Cult Blood Red Moon, 1Q, and some blends from a local store), but the one I keep coming back to is the Sutliff Whiskey Cavendish. It’s the most pleasant smoke to me. In the second and third spots...

    New York City

Barclay-Rex says they offer day passes, but they list prices only for annual and monthly membership. Anyone know about that?

    New York City

The hotel is near Times Square.

    New York City

I will be in NYC for a few days for a work thing. The hotel is tobacco free. Where do you go to smoke a pipe?

    Estate Pipe

I’m new to this, so I don’t know how to tell the difference. But the Savinelli website says this pipe comes with a vulcanite stem.

    Estate Pipe

I cleaned the pipe. The stem was clean inside and out, but there was a lot of buildup in the mortise. But I still get that chemical taste, and it is clearly coming from the stem. (I put only the stem in my mouth, and there’s the taste.) Any further tips?

    Estate Pipe

It looked quite clean (photos attached). How do I treat an oxidized stem?

    Estate Pipe

I just got a nice Savinelli estate pipe from Etsy. The first smoke had a very chemically flavor—I suspect it’s from whatever they used to clean the stem. Will this go away, or do I need to do something?

    Larry’s Blend

I tried Larry’s Blend for the first time last night. It reminded me of a really peaty scotch like Ardbeg.

    Park Lane Red Paramour

In my introduction thread, someone recommended that I go to Park Lane Tobacco in Clifton Park, NY, since I live in the area. I went today and picked up some of their Red Paramour. Apparently they had discontinued the blend because the source of some of their tobaccos had gone out of business...

    Travel Bag

Okay, sounds like not a good idea. I might note that at present I have one $20 pipe and a few $9 pipes, so if they break it’s not a huge loss. I haven’t ventured into the better pipes yet. Also, this will be a road trip, so no worries about baggage handling. At any rate, are there...

    Travel Bag

I’m going on a two-week vacation in a month, and I am thinking of buying a leather dopp kit like this one: Amazon.com - https://a.co/d/4btITJo. Mainly because the dopp kit is much less expensive than a pipe bag. Is there any reason that might be a bad idea and I should get the pipe bag instead?

    Smoking indoors?

I’m sure there’s a thread about this somewhere, but I couldn’t find it on a quick search. I’m wondering what it would take to smoke in one room of the house and not let the smoke smell spread. Obviously I would need to think about how this room is connected to others via central air. But what...

    Relighting

Thanks for all the great tips, especially the advice not to sweat it. I tried a different blend today and the experience was very different—many fewer relights. So, it’s about learning what works for that particular blend. The new blend was Cult Blood Red Moon, which I let dry out for a while...
