    Tea and a Pipe

I bought a small 10gm sample. It certainly wasn’t as bad as it’s sometimes made out to be. And I water-flushed my pipe out immediately after the smokes. Surprisingly little ghosting. I enjoyed it, but not enough to put in another order. But then I do enjoy Mixture 79, which many find polarising

    Tea and a Pipe

I would have thought Earl Grey with Ennerdale 🤔 I used to like Earl Grey, but can’t stand it anymore. Likewise jasmine tea. I drink mainly English Breakfast, Chinese (usually Puer eh or oolong) and Japanese. And chai. Usually without milk.

    Old meer stem alignment?

@condorlover1 will be unhappy that the pipe has been dissembled. But it is already done A simple solution is to use a thick felt ring between the stem and shank. Obviates the need to fiddle with the tenon and risk damaging it or the stem. A length of dental floss wound around the tenon or a few...

    Seconds. What exactly are they?

Please correct me if I’m wrong Back in the Patent era (pre-mid 1970s) of Stanwell, they only had one grade (that I am aware of) Then in the ‘70s their marketing department had the “brilliant“ (NOT !) idea of multiple lines. As well as a multitude of lines of seconds  It’s so confusing...

    Old meer stem alignment?

Paging @Chasing Embers and @condorlover1 The bone tenons should be attached to the stem. Not the shank. You could try VERY GENTLY to loosen the tenon from the shank Try the freezer method OR carefully drip (very) tiny drops of alcohol into the tenon/shank interface I’d send it off to an...

    Old meer stem alignment?

Be VERY careful. Handle with care. Bone tenons are fragile. And amber stems are even fragiler

    Seconds. What exactly are they?

Comoy was one of THE Britwood brands and back in the day, the top of their line was the Specimen Straight Grain. Any potential Specimen Straight Grains found to have a fill or a pit was downgraded to Special Straight Grain or Select Straight Grain and would not be accorded the “Comoy” stamp or...

Planning return to piping with a change in direction.

I really like Peterson's (formerly Dunhill) Elizabethan Mixture - a rather gentle VaPer. Sutcliff's Match Victorian is supposedly a match for the previously Murray-produced Elizabethan Mixture. And it's touted by some as better than the current STG-produced version. And it is available in bulk

    Picking on Brits a Bit

Apologies. I made a mistake - it should have been Nigeria, rather than SA

    Picking on Brits a Bit

One upshot of migration to the UK and Ireland from the colonies over the last few decades has been increasing imports to the UK/Ireland of Sth African-brewed Guinness stout. Apparently the colonials find the stuff available in the Mother Country TOO piss weak 😁

Would you keep an ugly pipe that smokes really well?

My imagination has never been a strong point. I’m afraid there will be too much of a disconnect between my brain and the “working“ (or in this case, NON-working) part ☹️

    19th century pipes

Clay pipes would have been ubiquitous in the 1700-1800s Meerschaums came in from 1720s onwards. But would have been for the wealthy. Briar pipes came in the mid-1800s, initially in France (St Claude) and spread to England in the late 1800s
