    Need Help Smoking a Briar.

Cobs have a wide open draft compared to the standard briar pipe, this is one reason I open up all my briar pipes as I find the standard airway too constricting for me. To get used to a briar vs a cob, I would start by drying your tobacco and try not to pack it as tight as you do with your cob.

Hello. I Need to Chill Out.

Welcome to the forums! You had a really cool boss! I wish I had a boss that would drop a pipe and tobacco off on my desk. Would be hard in my current position though, my boss lives in California and I work from home. It’s a good idear to pace yourself, I struggle with that too, especially...

Do You Prefer Briar, Meerschaum, or No Preference?

I still prefer briar. Meerschaum is great, I enjoy smoking mine but I’m definitely a briar guy.

    Should I Buy Aged Tobacco?

So far, so good. The only blend that I didn’t like better with age was Bijou, I enjoy that young, which is funny because it’s part of the cellar series. Some have greatly improved with age, while I’ve not detected much change, if any in the majority of blends.

    Estervals Delivery in Four Days!

One time back in 2017, I placed an order with Estervals on the same day I ordered from SPC, I was blown away that I got the package from Estervals a day before my SPC order. I love Estervals, I’ve also had some really good tobacco talk with one of the employees there. Good to hear they are still...

    New Member/Advice on Pipe

Welcome. I don’t use snuff much anymore because it really stuffs me up and I need to breathe so I can enjoy my pipes but from time to time I still sprinkle it over a freshly packed bowl. It can add an extra dimension of flavor and add more nicotine to my smoke, give it a whirl sometime.

***What Are You Smoking, April 2023?***

We got a nice cold spell in Austin today, it’s really nice, it will probably be the last for a good 7 months. I’m going on my old man walk with two pipes. One St. Regis Pot filled with some 2012 Plum Pudding & the IMP is filled with 2015 Silver Flake.

    Perique and Certain Va/Pers

Not sure why some are more peppery while others are fruity, that’s a good question. I remember Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls had the more fruity Perique, I haven’t had it in a long time though. If you can find some, Dunbar is another one with fruity Perique.

    Burley Recommendation

Oh you are talking about the lil cigars? I thought you were looking to get the one you linked.

    Burley Recommendation

Good stuff, why don’t ya just buy it? Worth the price imo, you get a lot of tobacco, it’s so dry, you aren’t paying for the water weight.

What are You Smoking (WAYS)- a Must Read?

I agree, it’s a great thread but unless you have a lot of time on your hands, it’s very hard to keep up with, the thread grows rapidly. I used to be a regular poster there but given my circumstances, I can’t post as much as I used to. I do wade through it from time to time and it often inspires...

    GL Pease The Virginia Cream

I haven’t aged long term but 5 years on it is splendid. I liked it so much I bought a bunch more. It’s an underrated Pease blend in my opinion.

    Esoterica Tobacciana - Dorchester Thoughts

I used to have a good relationship with one of the employees there back in 2012, he always kept extra stock and held it in the basement for me, he’d call me every time they got a new shipment in. I think they were charging $40 a bag back then and I thought that was expensive… well, it was...

    Esoterica Tobacciana - Dorchester Thoughts

That’s pretty expensive for a B&M, I guess it depends on where you live, my local shop sells them for $16 a tin or $32 for a bag. They were even cheaper back when I was stocking up. I love Dorchester but my real love is Dunbar, it’s definitely one of my favorite VaPers, their Virginias are just...

    Family/Friends/Public's Favorite Room Notes

I’ve gotten complimented on some of the most surprising blends. Full Virginia Flake - a huge hit with the ladies Old Joe Krantz - the first time I got complimented on this was at a company bbq, by a ridiculously fine female, then she had to end it with those dreaded words, “it reminds me of my...

    A Fistful of Crud

That’s really cool! Did they tend to charge a lot more for estate pipes that were previously owned by the famous? I imagine you had a good relationship with the folks at the shop. I would think, filthy pipes or not, they could get good prices on those pieces. Do you mind posting a picture or...

    Foreign Matter in Tobacco

Very true, haha. It’s just a fact of life if you love your pets. It grosses non-dog people out but that’s a good thing because I’d rather know if a person is anti-dog before I take the time to get to know them. I am pretty sure I wouldn’t get along very well with a person who doesn’t like dogs.

    Plum pudding vs Bengal Slices

I find that the current iterations of these do taste very similar, like same blend, different topping. They used to be very different back in the day (a common theme, I know).

Just Won a Stanwell: Any Good?

I love Stanwell’s! I like the ones that are made for a filter because they have a nice open draw if you don’t use the filter. I have 8 or 9 Stanwell’s, all of them smoke great!

**CHALLENGE** Building a cellar of quality bulk tobaccos for $250.

Currently I’d probably stock up on $250 of Mac Baren Navy Flake but I already have that so… I like @sasquatch suggestion, get you a good VA and a Balkan/English & you’re set. Those 2 are my favorite of their respective genres. Both Skiff & FVF age really well too. $250 really isn’t a lot to...
