    Cheap vs Expensive Pipes?

I think that the biggest difference with factory pipes and price is likelihood. You're much more likely to get a good-smoking factory pipe from a recognizable brand when you spend $100 to $150 than you are buying a basket pipe. That said, I have a no-name Canadian I bought for $20 over 40 years...

    RO62, Calling Blendmeister Russ

It was probably the most complex blend in terms of number of different tobaccos used and I liked the result. There are three different Virginias some Orientals and black Cavendish. The funny thing is that as time goes one I found myself using fewer components and still being pleased with the...

    Flavor Spectrum of Burleys

If you see the terms White Burley or Mahogany Burley used in the blend description, you should be fine. If they mention Dark Burley, that's the stuff you should avoid if you don't like that cigar-like flavor. The lighter-colored Burleys usually also have a moderate amount of vitamin N, but the...

Royal Yacht out of stock... again???

From what I was told, a small supply was found in the warehouse that no one was aware of. I'm glad you got to take advantage. Russ

    Why Is Moretti Overlooked?

We have worked with Marco on some projects and haven't been disappointed in any aspect of our dealings. Russ

    Charatan Stamped Not For Re-Sale

I have a Dunhill pot that was given to me by the (then) distributor that was stamped like that. Russ

    How Do You Clench?

I used to have some moisture problems early on, but that's because I clenched the bit in my molars. Today, I'm of the same school as Embers in that I hang the pipe in the front of my mouth, just using my upper front teeth to keep the pipe from slipping. Russ

Dunhill Blends to Return? - Hearsay

To clarify: Scandinavian Tobacco Group isn't responsible for killing off the latest versions of Dunhill. They were contracted by the Dunhill trademark holder to make the tobaccos. It's the people who own the Dunhill name who are responsible for their demise. The reason I refer to the "trademark...

Were You Ever A One Blend Smoker?

I rarely smoke the same blend twice in a row. Of course, when working on a new blend, I would make an exception. That said, while I'm at work I smoke the same type of blend all the time - i.e. - a$$kickers. Otherwise I wouldn't make it through the day. Russ

    Pipe tobacco samples

As we understand it, the problem with selling samples is that you would have had to have sold samples that size prior to 8/8/16. So if you never sold tobacco in .25 or .5 oz. sizes prior to that date, you can't sell them now. It's still up in the air about free samples with purchase. If the FDA...

    A "strong" soft flame lighter?

Just a cautionary note - if you use a torch-flame lighter, you may/will void any warranty that the manufacturer supplies. There are ways to determine if a burnout is caused by a torch and no replacements can be made. Russ

P&C has Victor Pipes (Erik Nording Grandson)

We are hoping to get set up for higher resolution images at some point. Currently our site is limited to 500 x 500, and we're pushing for 1000 x 1000 sometime soon. Russ

Will the FDA Stop Future Sale On Bulk Tobacco?

As far as the FDA goes, I think B&Ms are safe because they're allowing tobaccos to be blended by hand in retail stores. Russ

    Reamer and Tin Question

There are some pocket reamers that have a serrated blade. The serrations are small so that would be my guess. Russ

Jim's John Cotton's Double Pressed Blends Reviews.

Jim had sent me his reviews prior to posting and I told him that his assessment matches mine to a 'T'. The Virginia is what I call "a Virginia for people who don't usually like Virginias" and the Kentucky has a fully matured aroma and flavor much like what you used to notice years ago when...

    Blends with cigar leaves

Many times, when I've used cigar leaf in a blend it's more to increase the volume of smoke than for flavor. The relatively high oil content makes for a creamier smoke. That said, 'cigar leaf' is a broad category because it not only includes the wide variety of cigar leaf types, but also can...

CORPS Show hosted by Sutliff!!! October 5, 2019

I'm very happy to be going to this show, and will be joining the esteemed master blender for Mac Baren, Per Georg Jensen, in presenting a blending seminar. The folks at Sutliff deserve a lot of thanks for opening up their facility for tours and to let the club have its show there, helping to...

First Taste of War Horse Green

The Green (other than the Valerian/Heliotrope difference) is topped more heavily that the red. The reason that both are so aromatic is that the base tobaccos include dark-fired Kentucky and dark air-cured leaf which would give it a flinty/earthy/peppery flavor without the top note. Russ

First Taste of War Horse Green

Just a note - the heliotrope/valerian/licorice are not part of the casing. They're components of the top-dressing which is applied toward the end of manufacture. Casings are generally some kind of sugar-based product and applied in the early stages or processing. Russ
