    Does amber have an odor??

Dug out a few pics. My light is meant to be 365nm - I'm doubtful, but you can get an idea.

    Does amber have an odor??

This is quite an appropriate topic for me at the mo. I have a Comoy meer and can't find any information on it at all, but I think it is a relatively contemporary pipe, maybe 70s/80s Turkish. I assumed that the stem was some synthetic/acrylic material made to look like cherry amber, but when I...

    Jeantet's Antidote - a catalytic pipe

Thanks for your comments folks. Regarding the chemistry, I'm no help. Whatsoever, in fact. But nicotine is very specific. As far as I know, catalytic converters work by modifying the molecular bonding (for example, adding oxygen atoms) much in the same way as aerated water replaces dissolved CO2...

    Jeantet's Antidote - a catalytic pipe

Thanks Davet, it is an interesting old pipe. Probably seen more as a curiosity now but by all accounts it was quite the thing back then. And it did clean up well. I don't see many straight grained oldies (I guess I'm not looking in the right places since it wasn't as if they chucked the straight...

    Jeantet's Antidote - a catalytic pipe

This is not so much a discussion thread than a brain dump, but one I hope may be interesting to some (and probably useful to very few). But there is very little information on this pipe so I thought it would perhaps be sensible to put the meagre results of my research in a place where the search...

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

Here it is: Patent Shell I did sent him an email and I think it was/is an honest mistake since he didn't know what a sandblast was. That said, he hasn't taken it down yet. Anyway, on the off-chance that he is of a litigious bent (or I'm wrong of course; perhaps Dunhill simply 'forgot' to blast...

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

I expect it is - the photos seem very familiar. I'm not a Dunhill person so I rarely look for them, but I'm sure I've seen it before.

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

Not sure where I should put this, if at all, but unless I'm very much mistaken there is a fake Dunhill kicking around ebay at the moment. I won't post the link but it is a shell patent (with a smooth finish).

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

Quite possible that wasn't the full collection and just got rid of the junk. They are stunning - I keep going back to look at them. It doesn't look like they came off the rack too often.

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

Agree - or at least broken them down into bite-sized chunks. But, if you need the money, you don't have much choice. Sad though (blinding buy, all the same).

Fancy having to say goodbye to that lot in one go.

Family era Barling with shape number modifier 'F'

Thanks Jesse. That ties in with the little info I managed to find on the Sinclairs which throws a little more weight to the possibility that I'm in the right ballpark there. Interesting regarding the 'F'. I'd not really thought about it before but you don't see many straight (as in not flared)...

Family era Barling with shape number modifier 'F'

Yes, you're right, the stem is actually in excellent condition, but I do wish I'd cleaned the crud off it before getting the camera out. I'd much rather have oxidization than a stem that's been buffed to within an inch of its life. The stamp is still deep enough to fill, the edges are still...

Family era Barling with shape number modifier 'F'

Hi Jesse. The stem does fan out but not excessively so. I did wonder if the 'F' referred to fishtail/fantail, but it doesn't seem to be significantly different. I also wondered if it referred to 'flat' as in long flat, but the stem has a gentle curve across the planes. No reg numbers - no...

Family era Barling with shape number modifier 'F'

G'day all As the title suggests, I have an early Barlings's that has an 'F' suffix to the model number and I can't work out why. The pipe is a 1126 and has just the Barling's stamp and a 'John Sinclair' stamp on the shank. It has no size, COM, grade etc, and has just the stem logo. Leaving the...

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

Beautiful! I have a real soft spot for old bulldogs and seeing these two may prove punishing on the wallet (not $900 punishing mind). I'm the antithesis of a Barling expert, but the dark walnut does seem unusual but if it was restained, it looks like it was done well. The ebay pipe looks a...

How to Proceed further with Polishing Waxes

Not sure if you can get them where you are (I'm UK), but I have recently switched compounds to Menzerna products. I still use standard tripoli, but I use their Glosswax 16 instead of White Diamond. The cut is about the same (perhaps a little finer) but the compound lays a far better surface for...

    Intriguing early French-made GBD

It's a wonder of the modern world. You have to hand it to the Victorians - what they lacked in moral flexibility, they made up for in class. (And the nameless soul that made it open source has my undying gratitude.)

    Intriguing early French-made GBD

It is an incredible catalog from an incredible resource, and is in the pubic domain. A 1500 page catalog produced for 1895 - I can't even comprehend the effort (and cost) that was required to produce it. I don't know how well Harrod's is known outside of the UK, but these were the glory days of...

    Intriguing early French-made GBD

Wow, looks wonderful. Shame about the chamber, but taking it easy with a bit of pipe mud or stove mortar or similar and I reckon it'll be fine. That stem still fits like a glove. This is from the 1895 catalog. bottom one looks closer, but it looks like it may have an angular shank (which would...
