Do You Have Rotations? Do You Rotate Your Rotations? A Rotating Rumination

Like a lot of people I took to dedicating my meagre pipe collection to styles of tobacco, so I rotate based on what I'm smoking, which generally seems to be VaPer or VaBur pipe if it's the morning and a straight virginia or latakia pipe if its late evening.

    Morning Coffee and a Pipe

Inspired by those posts on At the Back of the Hill, I took to attempting Hong Kong milk tea with a bowl of Bob's Chocolate Flake. That was a fantastic weekend breakfast indulgence. Otherwise its been VaPer and black coffee for the invigorating morning mindslap.

Gawith Hoggarth Shag Tobaccos -- Impressions?

How does Kendal Dark compare to Dark Flake unscented? I find the latter a bit too much. Is KD's dark-fired softened out with virginia more?

    Recent TAD Pick-Ups

Nice. I just managed to pick up a 35g sample of Paul's own McCranies RF & RR/McC Aurora/Oriental mix for not much money too.

Gawith Hoggarth Shag Tobaccos -- Impressions?

That adds a new angle on all those TR comments about Ennerdale smelling like grandma's underwear.

Gawith Hoggarth Shag Tobaccos -- Impressions?

Rich Dark Honeydew is another interesting G&H ready rubbed/shag. I really didn't like it but was interested to know what people used to get from old Gallahar's version.

Auntie in England. What Should I Do?

Good luck finding some RDF!! Online over here RDF is selling out as fast as any Eso drop over your side of the pond. I'd be extremely surprised if you find any. As has been said, we've been waiting months and months for Brown Flake, Medium Flake, 1820 Flake, etc However, you can get Germain's...

Bought an Old Tin of Balkan Sobranie w/ some Tobacco

I have a few tins of original Sobranie and the earlier cutter top are little different from the 70s tins. I was also gifted the remnants of a 70s tin and it was certainly more like what you have there. Here's a recently opened tin of 1940s/50s Sobranie - And here's a 70s era tin -...

What Makes Brown Flake Just That?

Thanks for the replies. That makes sense. Longer in the steam jacket press. I'd wrongly presumed it to indicate something about the constituents, I.e. a trad name for a vabur flake, in contrast to a straight virginia flake

What Makes Brown Flake Just That?

Hi, I've smoked traditional SG and Germains versions for years but this morning tried G&H brown Flake u/s for the first time. I was struck by the noticeable dark fired note, both on my hands after rubbing it out and in the smoke. Which got me wondering what defines a brown Flake? Is it the...

    British 'Dark-Fired Virginia'

Fantastic! Very helpful. So not only is there a dark leaf varietal, there's a multitude of bright leaf varietals that the industry generally refers to as virginias? So I guess that means that the 'dark' bit of 'dark fired virginia' refer more to the colour of the final product, as opposed to...

    British 'Dark-Fired Virginia'

Yesterday I tried G&H Westmoreland Slices for the first time and was really thrown by it. On TR it was described as straight virginia and it clearly had what I know as a strong, deep, spicy kentucky/dark leaf profile. I read all available descriptions of it and it gets described as 'dark-fired...

I Got Scammed On Instagram, Careful Out There

And that's it...all I've ever experienced from fellow pipers both in the UK and US is extraordinary generosity of spirit. What a shame.

I Got Scammed On Instagram, Careful Out There

The surprising part about this to me is that the perpetrator clearly knew their pipe tobaccos. My wife who sells her artwork through instagram had a similar attempt last week, in that the person trying it on had sought out a pretty niche product, dm-ed the right sort of questions about it and...

Please Advise a 'New' Pipe Smoker.

Hello from another newb to the forum but also from the north of the UK! The closest I've found here in the UK to the classic original Balkan Sobranie, at least for that smooth, melded, incense-like, oriental-forward English note is Germain's 1820 Flake and less so with Special Latakia Flake...
