    Ruminations Regarding the Proper Cake

I find the risk/reward ratio does not favor building a cake, at least in my humble opinion. Assuming the cake itself is cultivated and maintained it can probably help insulate the pipe. I can even buy into the argument that it can be useful in "seasoning" a pipe similarly to how a iron skillet...

    Favorite Peterson Pipe Finish

I like both, but Peterson has really stepped up their sandblasting. I got a PSB deluxe system that looks gorgeous. But even their non-PSB sandblasts look pretty good. Been eyeing a Sherlock pipe, because their red sandblasting looks great.

What's Your Favorite After-Shave or Cologne?

One of my favorite colognes, John Varvatos's "Dark Rebel," is sadly discontinued. You can occasionally find a bottle of it online, but at a mark-up. Thankfully, there are two other colognes recently discovered that I enjoy more, and both are by Dunhill: Agar Wood and Egyptian Smoke. I favor...

The Love of Sports or the Lack Thereof

Yes. I avidly watched baseball when I was younger and mostly enjoyed it, even if the slower pace of the sport sometimes bored me. Never was big on football or basketball, but I tried to make it a point to keep up with basic trends since those were subjects dear to my dad and most other men...

    What do you do

It depends well on the circumstances, but as a general rule, my manner of dealing with melancholy is to follow the disciplined Stoic routine that I have long since set for myself. By and large, impressions (i.e. the involuntary physical and emotional reaction to outside stimuli) are often...

    November 22 1963

Not being of that generation, the veneration of JFK--especially the comparisons of him and his family to royalty--has always struck me as odd. I understand he was very charismatic and that his untimely demise made him something of a martyr for an entire generation, so I guess I shouldn't say...

    November 22 1963

I recall reading Robert Dalek's biography on Kennedy, where he raises the same issue you do, Briar: that an entire generation just cannot accept the fact that a single man with a rifle could kill the president and change the course of history without some sort of help or outside influence...

Who Has a Job He Actually Loves?

I wouldn't go as far as to say I love my job, but I do like it, which is a miracle unto itself. I'm a case manager at a regional jail. My responsibilities are largely focused on helping inmates get connected to various community resources and services to aid them in their recovery and...

    First Attempt - Dismal Failure!

Two questions: 1. As you were doing your charring light, how did the tobacco taste then? I know you said it tasted poorly when you went to do your second/true light, but I'm asking about your charring light. 2. What kind of matches did you use?

    Show off Your Smoking Rooms!

I use both simultaneously when possible. Not all the smoke will escape the window, and the air purifier helps prevent smoke from clinging to the walls and yellowing them. It can also cut down on the smell. Add a decent candle to burn while smoking, and you are well on your way.

    Pipe "Break In"

I'm not as seasoned as many others here, but I've over three years devoted to this vice, and I find myself increasingly convinced that most of the commonly accepted smoking practices that are advocated by hobbyists are not really indicative of any empirical and time-tested wisdom worth paying...

    Show off Your Smoking Rooms!

Not sure if I would call this a proper smoker's parlor or what-have-you; I have to be careful since I rent and my space is limited. Not pictured is a Levoit air purifier, odor-eliminating candles, and a cracked window. I do find, as long as I stick to pipe smoke (the cigars are too pungent)...

    Stomatitis nicotina

You do have to get accustomed to P-lips if you are more used to traditional bits, such as the fishtail. I'm not an expert on stomatitis, but based on what you posted, it seems to be caused by heat from excessive smoking. If that is the case, smoking more slowly and perhaps a little less seems...

    Nicotine Pouches are Evil

Forgive my ignorance, but what makes these pouches functionally different than, say, nicotine gum or patches?

Chacom Montmarte 17 - a new addition to my collection

If it helps any, I have that exact same pipe, but in a lighter shade of briar and stem, and I can say it is a nice little smoker. Good if you're looking for a travel pipe with a little class to it. Chacom pipes are usually pretty nice smokers that punch above their weight.

    PSA: Check Your Tins Folks!

I cannot help but feel in good company if GL Pease agrees with me. Even so, no method is perfect, but I really do prefer jarring my tobaccos. I probably go a little too thorough with it: nearly all my tobaccos are in those overpriced Le Parfait jars that use a rubber seal and metal closure...

    PSA: Check Your Tins Folks!

I always take my tobacco out of the tin immediately and jar it. Every time. The only exceptions I make are for tobaccos where I got them for free and don't want to waste the extra space and effort on them (I still got tins of last year's Xmas blends that are unopened). At least once every...

125th Anniversary Rua Deluxe System Pipe

Really wanted to snag one, especially since I love Deluxe Systems and the Rua sandblast looks so cool. Alas. I promised myself to not spend too much money on pipes this year and the price for these was steep. They were also snagged up quickly, so by the time I was even aware, only a handful...

New Tin of Prince Albert, With a Surprise...

Not to derail the thread, but I honestly don't know. I'd say the amount is less and that 5 grams is the most liberal estimate, but I haven't read the study from University of New Castle for myself, so I can't say with much confidence. The whole 5 grams thing kinda took off on the internet...

New Tin of Prince Albert, With a Surprise...

This thread had me set up thinking there would be a twist on the old "Prince Albert in a can" joke. Alas. We're just smoking plastic. Some scientists estimate the average American consumes roughly 5 grams of microplastics in a week, so fuck it. Don't even chuck it out. Might as well smoke...
