    In Praise of Early Work

Along those lines, one of the things I like best about newer pipe makers is relative affordability. I have purchased a few pipes at reasonable prices from carvers that are now out of my comfort zone financially.

    Would Love Recommendations on Blends.

Sounds like you like Navy Flakes (Windjammer and No. 400). If you want to stay in that lane, I recommend Mac Baren's Navy Flake and Same Gawith Navy Flake. You've got a few VaPers on your list too so Escudo always comes out when people talk about their favorites. If you can get your hands...

    In Praise of Early Work

I was thinking about what you said regarding laurel-resting. That is definitely human nature and I'm not saying that pipe makers are immune to it (I know some that aren't). But the details definitely matter and if a pipe maker is slipping, eventually people start talking about it and the...

    Cringle flake 2023

Sutliff. If I recall correctly, in that podcast they were saying that people kept complaining about the addition of perique in the Cringle Flake so they were just going to make a straight Virginia to appease the whiners. (That last part was just me putting words in their mouth.)

    In Praise of Early Work

More examples of musicians come to mind than novelists when I think about this phenomenon. It makes sense to me that an undiscovered songwriter would spend years and years perfecting 10 to 12 songs that more people can relate to. Contrast that with someone that has "made it" in the music...

The mug inspired me to choose this tiny straight apple pipe made by Jared Coles with Meridian by Pease.

    Preferred Whiskey/Whisky Proof?

I'm primarily a Scotch drinker and I would guess that 96 proof is my floor. I've had several below that level that were good but they don't captivate my attention as much as many of the cask strength expressions do. That said, Springbank 18, which is right at 46% is my all-time favorite whisky.

Found out a Friend is a Pipe Smoker!

If you really want to introduce him to a different kind of pipe, I'd recommend buying yourself the same exact pipe and then when you give it to him you could say, "I bought us these pipes to try." Smoking the same pipes would seem less like you're trying to level up his smoking and more like a...

Looking for an EMPTY tin of Butera Kingfisher

I don't know anything about collecting fishing line spools but I can see right away why someone would be attracted to collecting such a thing. The art work and nostalgia it produces is captivating. Thanks for sharing!

    What are You Reading Now?

I'm about halfway through this one and I've enjoyed it so far. It's not life-changing but it's well-written and has kept my attention.

    The Five Families

My main Italian pipes are Castello, Ardor, Cavicchi, Ser Jacapo, Rinaldo, and Savinelli. Among these makers I have roughly 50 pipes.

    Favorite Peterson Blends

Irish Flake. It's one of the two blends I smoke every single day. University Flake is a VERY distant second for me.

***What Are You Smoking, October 2023?***

Yeah, it caught my eye too (obviously). Many Ardor pipes are too "out there" for me but for whatever reason, this combination worked for me. That said, I completely understand where you're coming from. It's hard to beat the more traditional black vulcaninte or cumberland stems for broader appeal.

I’m reading the digital edition of the October NASPC newsletter and I’m going to open a tin of High Roller Flake. I will smoke it in a 2018 Ardor natural blowfish.

    Halloween pipes, anyone?

I’m the happy owner of one of Trevor Talbert’s Halloween pipes. I’m blown away by the talent it takes to carve something like this.

    Chacom Christmas pipe

I like the colors and the shapes but there's something about pipes with both sandblasted and smooth sections that I find jarring visually. It's as if they couldn't make up their minds about which way to go.

    $1.4 Million Bottle of Scotch

Reminds me of Esoterica blends. And for those saying Scotch is overpriced these days, some of it is. But you can get some amazing bottles in the $35-$50 range. Granted, you can also get some more amazing bottles in the $150-$300 range too . . . There's a good bottle out there for every budget.
