    Hi

Hey from central North Carolna, U.S. The fez I'm wearing in the photo at the left is one brought me from Istanbul by my well-traveled sister. Welcome aboard.

    Bloomsburg, PA

Well if the neighbors and your girlfriend thought you were smoking because you think you are cool, that may be a good thing. At one point my late wife, put out with me about something, advised me, "You know you are no Adonis." She was usually much kinder than that, but I guess she was...

    Happy Birthday, America!!

Happy July 4 to one and all. Sit back, have a pipe and a brew, and watch the fireworks in person or on TV. I've seen the Grucci fireworks in person over the Hudson River in NYC, from the New Jersey side and it is an absolute show. Other places are enjoying lights in the sky by drones. I've...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2023?***

Lane Limited HGL in a Savinelli bent bulldog 673 KS Opera with a thin two--color band. Happy July 4 to all my fellow U.S. citizens. Here in central N.C. it's 93 degrees F and sunny. That flag is out and it feels just like the Fourth of July.

    New Canine Friend

The dogs know who is in charge, as well they should be, and they think you are a good good person, good person. Are they smart? Way smarter than people understand. In the dog world, they are the geniuses, and the dog world is doing somewhat better than the human world. They study us from...

    Anyone Seen Oppenheimer?

I'd be interested in the movie drama, and also the documentary to be shown next Sunday night at 10 p.m. EDT on TV -- see your local listings. Oppenheimer was a complicated person taking on an even far more complicated military and moral conundrum, but if he hadn't done it, there were plenty who...

Your Approach When Finding Your White Whale?

I admit I am suspicious of the white whale concept. Why is the white whale always something that costs five or six times what I would otherwise feel comfortable spending on a pipe? And how does it happen, no matter how I squirm and dance, that a lot of great smokes are had in pipes that are...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2023?***

Esoterica Tilbury, thank you to SBC, in an extra large chambered Johs semi-rusticated slightly bent apple thanks to my wife on Christmas 2010. This is one of the finer tobaccos I've enjoyed this year, very good indeed. I'm planning to rise a little early to put out the flag for July 4, though...

    New Will Purdy Prince-Hawk

That's lovely shaping in design, and I have seldom seen a stain and stem color so elegantly matched (other than all-black pipes). That is a prize indeed. I hope you have many decades of smoking pleasure with that. It really is quite a looker.

    Best online retailer

SP has to win the top award for online pipe and pipe tobacco retailers for prompt accurate order fulfillment, individually photographed pipes, giving complete specifications on all pipes including weight and shape, and as if all this isn't enough, they have management that fulfills remarkable...

    New Eltang Basic

These look like good basic pipes, and I'm reassured by the report that they smoke really well. It does seem like a basic pipe should have a really moderate price, ala MM cobs and even the similar basic pipe from Nording. But I guess it is like denim jeans. Some people are happier paying $128...

Congrats Shane Ireland - Confrérie des Maîtres Pipiers de Saint-Claude

I think that kind of professional organization and recognition is why French pipes are well over their price points in quality. It's not just a commercial operation. Pipe making is an art and a profession.

    New to Me Gepetto Estate

If I remember correctly, Gepetto is a sub-brand of Ser Jacopo and makes some quality pipes at somewhat more moderate prices. That looks like a handsome straight Dublin with probably a nice roomy chamber. Years ago I bought a new Ser Jacopo on sale at SP with a windfall I'd made on a writing...

    Ketchup - Storage and Uses

I've long since fallen in step with the idea (catechism?) that catsup on hotdogs is verboten, though in my ignorant youth, despite growing up near the high church of hotdogs, Chicago, I'd put catsup on there with everything else on the condiment shelf, from chili to horseradish. Now I go with...

    Hello From Oregon!

Moving is our punishment for hoarding all this stuff. My wife moved here with the households from Long Island and Greenwich Village, and we've never recovered. Culling with a backhoe is needed. It's all useable stuff, just five times what we need. So maybe we'll sort it out? We're keeping...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2023?***

Newminster #306 English Oriental, a mild English blend including burley as a condiment, in a La Rocca slightly bent carved-rusticated poker. Had a good July 4 weekend call with family and just had a beer and pretzel snack before a roast pork supper. We've been enjoying a visiting deer in the...

Aging tobacco in my own lifespan

IMHO, burley does not usually improve a great deal with age, though I feel like I have experienced exceptions, but it does preserve well. So though burley isn't a good candidate for aging for improvement, it lasts an amazingly long time if stored properly.

    Found An Old Folding-Knife Friend

I just fished the once-lost Case knife out of my pocket to admire it. Two highly attractive things about it are the handle and the rivets. I'm not sure rivets is the right nomenclature, but these are bright copper color, with a large one that hinges the single blade itself and two smaller ones...

Help a Fella Out with Burley

If you enjoy English blends with burley as a condiment, which I have always liked, give Newminster #306 English Oriental a try. A Forums member sent me a baggie along with some tins of other interesting blends, and I was surprised at how refined and tasty it is. Burley livens up the...

Aging tobacco in my own lifespan

Aged tobacco is interesting and sometimes decidedly better than a fresher tin or jar. However, aging has become a fetish, and it's all kind of silly. The majority of blends smoke well right out of the tin, fresh from the blenders. In fact, usually, the tobacco has been aged sufficiently...
