School me on Hand Cut, Hand Made and Free Hand Designations.

My interpretation is that hand made/hand cut simply mean it is not a factory produced pipe and seem to have been used interchangeably from what I can tell. In modern parlance hand cut is also often used to describe a stem specifically, but I’ve certainly seen it stamped on briar as well...

***What Are You Smoking, January 2024?***

Thanks! I mislabeled it, just FYI, it’s a Chacom not a Comoy’s, FWIW, haha. Technically I was half right 😂

I mean…….I just can’t anymore….. Sure, it’s the sap. 🤦‍♂️ Rock on, brotha. You’re a wild one but we love ya anyway.

    School Me on Stem Making.

See that’s one of the big differences I’ve noticed regarding stems. A skilled artisan would have a heart attack at the sight of that bit. The slot is way off center, it’s clunky, bulky, and has the squared off simplicity of a factory made pipe produced in a mold. Which is perfectly fine for...

    School Me on Stem Making.

Not entirely sure it came out of the factory that way, but who knows. That being said, there have been, and still are today, many fine French factories that produce excellent pipes that don’t get half the credit they deserve, simply because they are affordable.

Same here. Now, that’s a better question! And the answer is……I have no idea 🤷‍♂️ Special editions, special occasions, just for the hell of it…..we may never know…😳😂

On this we agree. Unfortunately, many people, of many different nationalities.

Objection, speculation! But what about the bit! Aka, the business end!

    School Me on Stem Making.

Hmmmm. I wonder what sort of over generalized ignorant stereotypes would surface about Algerians if we were disrespectful enough to cast them about haphazardly on an otherwise respectful forum. Hopefully, we won’t find out, or this thread will be closed down in a hurry.

    School Me on Stem Making.

This is, quite simply, factually incorrect. Granted, what constitutes a good or comfortable stem is somewhat subjective, but artful stem WORK is not. And I mean this with the utmost respect, and don’t mean it to be derogatory, but of the many many many pipes I have seen you post, which you...

The briar has nothing to do with it man! You are simply changing the finish, making the briar appear a different color.

The folks at Pipe-dan in the 1960’s were the ultimate chimney freaks. These are all from the same 1962 Catalog (which is worth a look in general, the Danish shaping revolution was going wild with legendary carvers at the helm. The Pipe-dan pipedia page has a link to the full catalog):

I use whatever my family buys me. I make it a point to stink around them so they get me soap and what not for christmas and birthdays (conveniently in December and June so I get a re-stock every 6 months). It’s been a foolproof free soap strategy since I was 13.
