    Unflavored Burley

Semois, the Belgium burley variant, doesn't have any flavorings (that I can discern). It is packed very dry in foil cubes, and the single leaf versions come in medium and thick cut. Because it is shipped really dry, you get a lot of smokes per ounce. It is also used as the base of a...

***What Are You Smoking, August 2023?***

Tonight, SH&Co. Squadron Leader special edition with Perique in a Johs smooth straight taper-stemmed billiard, and for the second act, D&R Two Timer twice-toasted burley in a Jerry Perry straight panel billiard with saddle stem carved of Mountain Laurel, a standard briar substitute during World...

Why I'm Beginning To Dislike Straight Pipes

I have clogging problems so rarely I've never given it any thought. My only issue with straight pipes is the increased leverage against my jaw and teeth when a straight pipe is somewhat heavy. These I smoke mostly in hand, but I still enjoy. Lighter straight pipes are not a problem...

    Thoughts or Stories on Hazing?

Opposed on principle. All of the team building and testing for toughness rationales can't hide the dead bodies. So, no, no hazing.

Cellaring- How Long is too Long?

It's a guessing game, highly dependent on the brand, the blend, the source, the leaf, the processing, the tins or jarring or mylar bags, the storage, the climate, and your astrological sign. (Not that last.) I don't age anything on purpose. I just buy more tobacco than I smoke so the rest of...

Time For A New Thread ?

I haven't decided on this issue. This is a highly knowledgeable tobacco pipe group, and a challenge now and then, when all of the "real" regular members get to share the answer or add to the discussion, seems like it could be stimulating and add interest. I can also see members who spend time...

***What Are You Smoking, August 2023?***

Esoterica Tilman, Virginia base with a burley condiment, thanks to fellow member SBC, in a Peterson Donegal bent rusticated briar Calabash, later last evening. Now off on a short errand to my "trading post," Walgreens. My cat Fred is posted on the computer modem which he enjoys for the warmth.

    Anyone Smoked a "carburated" pipe?

The E.A. Carey pipe didn't have the little valve (?) at the base of the bowl. It had little vent slots on the stem as I recall. I didn't notice any cooling of the smoke, but I don't smoke hot anyway. I just didn't see a benefit, and it so diluted the flavor, I found it unsatisfying.

    New Here! Question about Non-aros

Depends on how many pipes you have, how you clean your pipes, and how sensitive your taste buds are. If you don't build cake, this reduces the potential for ghosting. Some of us scoop out the ash and wipe out the bowl with an abrasive paper towel, avoiding cake while maintaining a necessary...

    G.L. Pease géométrie Review

This is one of those blends that is bliss or bust depending on the smoker, I'd surmise from the mixed response. It's either your heart's desire or not.

***What Are You Smoking, August 2023?***

PC Elizabethan Match in the Savinelli rusticated straight apple I won with a first place entry in the old cartoon caption contest sponsored by pipes magazine and smoking pipes dot com. I also won a Savinelli t-shirt I still have and wear regularly. I've never subscribed to the seasonal...

My Cat is Afraid of a Cow

Years ago we had a doorbell curious cat. One time she went into the attic and we were afraid she'd get down into the walls and need rescuing, but my wife rang the front doorbell, and down came the cat to see who was coming to visit her.

    I'm Losing my Mind

Members have sent me some wonderful blends like Brown Sugar Flake, GLP Barbary Coast, Esoterica Tilbury, Frog Morton Cellar, and others. I've never had difficulty finding excellent blends that I enjoy at reasonable prices.

    Anyone Smoked a "carburated" pipe?

Years ago I had an carburetor pipe and saw no benefit from it, so I finally taped over the slots and smoked it the regular way. E.A. Carey used to sell those inexpensively with magazine ads, and sold a lot of them. I think it harkens back to the days when pipe sales was a big competitive...

    New York City

Cultures change. The idea that you can't smoke in an English or Irish pub anymore seems outrageous. I go back to the days of smoking cars on trains and the smoking sections on planes. I rode a Greyhound from Chicago to Ft. Myers, Fla., and had to walk off the nicotine at the rest stops, and I...

My Cat is Afraid of a Cow

No two cats are alike. I had an all-black female who had high-beam eyes. Usually she looked quite sweet, but if another cat or other animal came in the yard she could run them off even through the window with her high beam glare. She wasn't a particularly large cat, but seeing the...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2023?***

Packed another round of Squadron Leader special edition with Perique, this time in a Tsuge straight taper stem blast billiard. This seems to be my go-to blend for heat waves. I'll light up after I finish a few chores. Some time in August, at least in North Carolina in the past, there have...

    R.I.P. Pee-wee

He got a hip take on the old vaudeville physical comedy in the tradition of Spike Jones and Jackie Gleason. Nearly everyone knows who Pee Wee Herman is. He'll live on through film and video.

    New York City

If you avoid crowds and keep walking in non-crowded areas, I think you'd be okay. It's when you get seated in a park or outdoor dining where other people are also seated it might get testy. But as long as you are moving on along anyway, people are bustling along too fast to develop a...

    Milwaukee, WI B&M

Some years after my Navy posting in Milwaukee, my late wife and I revisited Wisconsin and really enjoyed an evening at a supper club. Supper clubs are a sort of Midwest tradition, are usually rural, and feature good cocktails, free relish tray, and hearty dining. Some have music and dancing...
