    Chipping cake!

And to answer your question, it's nothing to worry about. A carbon lining isn't totally necessary. If you're smoking a crummy pipe made in the 1950s that's got two dozen putty fills then you might want some reinforcement. But otherwise, a cake buildup is not a requisite for a good smoking pipe.

    Chipping cake!

Was there pre-carb in the bowl or was it natural? I've noticed that some pre-carb formulas have a harder time taking a carbon buildup and what cake does build will chip and flake off occasionally.

    lighters or matches?

roleur, I'd stay away from torch lighters; they burn super-hot and will destroy a pipe. Hold it at the wrong angle and you will put a big ol' soft spot on the inside of a tobacco chamber.

    lighters or matches?

I preferred matches for years and years but got tired of piling up my ashtrays (and then garbage) with the waste. Switched to a lighter some time ago. Bic lighters burn my thumb. Probably because I try to avoid charring the rim. Can't stand 'em. I love Zippo lighters when it comes to lighting...

    Tokutomi Pipes

Pipe smoking is actually pretty popular in China and Japan. There are many collectors of high grade pipes in both countries. In fact, most of Bo Nordh's early production is in Japan currently. In Japan, Japan Tabacco handles most of the country's pipe tobacco market. Mac Baren also sends a...

    Disappearing from shelves

baskerville59, both the Walmart and the CVS right by my new condo sells PA, CH and Captain Black in several different size options. I think we still have a lot of pipe smokers in South Carolina so the big chains still carry OTCs.

Roughly half of my collection is reserved for blends with Latakia while the other half is not. I have two pipes for the occasional aromatic and a handful of pipes for Lakeland blends.

puffy, thanks for the kind words. We're all a little concerned here. Out headquarters is about two miles inland (we're in Little River, SC). I already told my wife that if she wants the photo albums it's her responsibility during an evacuation. I will be making decisions about pipes, tobacco...

    Rest your pipe, or not?

I don't mess around with a rotation. I will smoke the same pipe as long as I feel like it, five or six times a day, week after week. Sure, I'll clean it and let it cool down between smokes, but I dry out my tobacco quite a bit before it's smoked which means that moisture tends not to be an issue...
