Kiribi Kabuto - How is Yours Holding Up?

Very handsome. I have the same model in my collection, but in a different finish.

Peterson Short Army Coating and Break-in Questions

As many others have noted, Peterson no longer dip stains. Occasionally, you might see a bit of bleed at the top of the mortise, but nothing like when they dip stained. You might also see some dark areas in the mortise from the drilling process, which some pieces of wood are more prone to. I...

    Show Off Your Petersons Here!

First off, it's not something I'm recommending. I'm sure that they use pipes with marginal briar for that finish, since it's basically opaque at the level that it is applied. You probably won't know what's below. I think I got lucky. What happened was that I was frustrated at the dull finish...

Kiribi Kabuto - How is Yours Holding Up?

Mine functioned fine, but the darned screw where the arm pivots has come loose frequently. I've been using a 1990s Dunhill Rollagas for a few years now and haven't looked back.

    Punchline Only!

Ah, but Honorable George Washington father not in cherry tree.

I've got 3 of the 4ABs. They are standout smokers. Unfortunately, I missed out on all of the higher grade finishes, so mine are a Heritage which I've removed all of the excess stain from, a sandblast, and a rusticated.

    Trouble Contacting Synjeco

In a remarkable coincidence, Daniel just responded to my email sent in early August.

    Stop The Gurgle.

One thing I love about spigots and army mount pipes is that in the event of a gurgle, I can easily remove the stem mid-smoke and either swab it out or flick out the moisture in the same direction it came from and away from my mouth. Unfortunately, the very design of these mounts somewhat...

    Stem Plugged

I love the good folks at MM and own many of their pipes, but I have on a few occasions purchased a MM which required a bit of work to remove a bit of plastic in the stem which was left behind during drilling. This has only been on their higher end pipes with fancier acrylic stems. Having toured...

    French Press Coffee Maker

Glass is just fine. Yes, the heat will dissipate, but that's a feature that makes French presses more forgiving than most other brewing methods. As the coffee cools, the rate of extraction slows. No "pressing" need for exact timing with a French Press. This also means that if you brew more than...

    Trouble Contacting Synjeco

I've written emails to Daniel at least three times in the last two years. No response to any of them.

    Show Off Your Petersons Here!

Some observations from my visit to the Peterson factory last Wednesday, in no particular order: It’s a factory in the sense that individuals perform specific steps of the pipemaking, rather than the entire pipe. Yes, stummels are fraised by machine and stems are preformed, but both are refined...

A couple new additions I purchased from Giangi Fiori at the Peterson Nassau Street shop in Dublin this week.

I’ll share my photos of the PPN pipes in the larval stage after they’re announced.

    Show Off Your Petersons Here!

I saw the PPN pipe stummels today in a tray at Jason the silversmith’s bench and saw him fashion a shank cap for the first one. They’re close to completion.

Who would you commission for a set of two pipes <1K USD (less than)?

Regarding paying in advance, I’ve done it multiple ways. Some don’t ask for a prepayment of any amount, provided that you’re not asking them to make something that’s far different from what they normally make (which you shouldn’t be doing anyway ;)). They know that even if you’re not satisfied...

Who would you commission for a set of two pipes <1K USD (less than)?

After reading through the earlier comments, I see that you're correct Jon. Lucky's target is below $1k rather than above. So, almost all of my recommendations were a bit too $$$, including Vollmer & Nilsson, especially for a smooth pipe. They're probably more in the $600-$800/pipe range. Chris...

Who would you commission for a set of two pipes <1K USD (less than)?

Unfortunately, I have no personal knowledge of Mr. Squatch's pipes, other than by reputation. I'm a big fan of Ryan Alden and have four of his pipes, all but one of which were commissioned. But I tend to associate sandblasted pipes with him, so I didn't mention him. If course, both Todd and...

    Which Luxury Lighter?

100%. The Swiss-made Dunhill Rollagas lighters with the side flame adjustment wheel are my favorite. I have both a Kiribi-like dual port, right-angle-flamed cigar lighter and a cigarette lighter that I recently converted to a pipe lighter. Super reliable and relatively easy to service. But the...

Who would you commission for a set of two pipes <1K USD (less than)?

I’d agree that you both have fairly traditionally-shaped pipes, with your wife preferring just a bit more flourish than you. Maybe you could comission a pair which were essentially the same, but individualized — a matched pair of distinct, yet complementary pieces. Seems like a fitting symbol...
