The Dreaded DHL Package Hostage Case

My best guess is that they randomly select packages for review and that size isn't important. The order I had waylaid was 3 kg, for what it's worth. This question of size or value triggering an interception has been bandied about many times, with no solid conclusions being drawn. A few of my...

The Dreaded DHL Package Hostage Case

It happened to me in June of 2021. In the end, DHL sent it back to Estervals who offered to either refund or reship at no additional charge. He mentioned that this sort of thing happens to about one out of 50 shipments and that almost always, the reshipped package is delivered without further...

    Dunhill Experts- Pipe Date

Ah, yes. David Fields’ guide is authoritative. However, if I had to say that the size of the 6 is equal to the size of the D in ENGLAND, I would say it is smaller. I still think 1956.

    C&D/Toscano Collab

I’ll be interested to hear if there’s much similarity to the Savinelli 140th Anniversary Blend. The DF florets it contained are basically Toscano cutoffs. Same with C&D’s Sansepolcro blend. At least, I think that’s my understanding. FWIW, my personal preference in dry Italian-style cigars are...

    Dunhill Experts- Pipe Date

My understanding is that the underlined version was dominant in the 50s, but not exclusive. On the other hand, in the 60s, it seems they were never underlined. I’d be comfortable calling it 1956. http://www.pipephil.eu/logos/en/dunhill/shell-guide.html

    Peterson NAP Stem 2.0

I was lucky enough to be among the group which Mark Irwin selected to be part of his NAP resurrection project. It might be just confirmation bias, but I do believe that it changes the smoking experience in a positive way. The main issues with them are cost to manufacture and the fact that you...

    High Impact Portable Humidor

Do you then remove the cigars and place a container of distilled water in the humidity to rehydrate it? I rehydrate mine regularly (before they start to harden) in a salad keeper with distilled water below a basket which contains the Boveda packs.

    Adelaide Australia

There used to be what appeared to be a very nice pipe shop with a sizeable pipe museum in Adelaide. Many of those items were moved to a local immigration museum when the shop closed. I have a display from that shop, but sadly, even years later, it and every unsmoked James Upshall pipe it...

    JJ Fox, London. Tuesday 21November.

I ended up in J.J. Fox because I arrived on Peterson System Day, which was a Sunday. The Peterson shop, which is indeed near Fox, was closed. However, I went to the Peterson shop the following day and met Giangi, who's a prince of a fellow. I picked up a beautiful Terracotta spigot prince. A...

Kopp to Handle "Worldwide Distribution" of HU Tobaccos

Agreed. Those blends were made by Dan Tobacco. Only the Kopp-made blends are surviving.

    JJ Fox, London. Tuesday 21November.

I hope that J.J. Fox in London had more pipes and tobacco than their shop in Dublin. It was mostly liquor. Towards the rear of the shop, they had cigars, a few pipes, their own pipe tobacco blends, and a few odd other pipe tobaccos. Pretty small shop overall, actually. I ended up buying a plug...

    Radiator pipes/bowls

I'm not sure that Chris Morgan is still making those bowls, but the Bones bowls were my favorite for the Radiator. I have the Morgan Bones version of the pipe with the white mouthpiece and think it looks very handsome. The bowl has colored beautifully, as Bones pipes are prone to do.

    Who is Doug Valitchka?

In my communications with him about pipes that were in my own collection, Doug has been clear that he doesn't consider himself an expert about every pipe. I feel confident that he doesn't knowingly misrepresent anything he has for sale. That said, I'm sure that he does make mistakes in his...

Kopp to Handle "Worldwide Distribution" of HU Tobaccos

WOW!! That’s great news. I'm particularly happy that it's K&K, which already appears to make some of HU's blends and makes excellent tobacco, in general. I have heard through a very short grapevine that Hans had considered getting out of the business unless he could find the right partner, so...

    Who is Doug Valitchka?

I’ve dealt with Doug at least a few times, either regarding a purchase, or asking him a question. He’s an honest and reliable seller as demonstrated by nearly 10000 eBay ratings and a composite rating of 99.8%. Given the sheer volume of pipes that pass through his hands, that makes him a...

    Favorite Peterson Pipe Finish

In the Sherlock Holmes series, the sandblasted versions sold in the USA have a red understain, just like the PSB finish. So, the biggest difference between a sandblasted and PSB SH pipe is the blast itself. You can often find a very nice sandblasted piece. Just be sure to buy from either a...

The Mystery of the Iron Cage

I had a similar trap in my stable that I was baiting with dry cat food. Every morning, I would find the trap sprung, the food gone, and no trace of the racoon. It turned out that I had a convenient spot to hide in that stable and it wasn't but a few minutes after I set the trap that the answer...

    Double Edged Razor Blades

Astra for me. Feathers are definitely sharper, but I find them too aggressive. Astra gives me an excellent, comfortable shave and lasts for many shaves. My beard is average thickness and coarseness. I rotate soaps between Stirling, Proraso, and Ogallala, but when I am shaving more than a day of...
