Normally, I purchase my G&H tobaccos to smoke as I get them. I don't age them for any other benefit than having to purchase in bulk and needing to store extra until I get to it.

I am getting low, and of course everyone is out. Story of my life. Anyway, I ran into a box in the back of the closet that had a jar in it supposedly of CCP, and I thought, how did I lose this? I'm guessing 5 years or more in terms of age for this jar- maybe more.

When I opened it, the normal scent of CCP was not present at all. Looks the same, definitely some dark fired tobacco.

My question: is it normal for the top dressing aroma to disappear/dissipate with time? It is certainly possible I have something else in the jar and have mislabeled it somehow. But not having any experience with aging this sort of stuff, I really don't know if what I am asking is even possible (it doesn't seem likely?), so thought I would ask here as surely someone has experience with this particular thing.

Also, any lead(s) on picking up some CCP is most welcome.

Thanks!

I had 8 ounces of G&H aro brown twist rope in a jar mason sealed.
Lost lot of topping.

Thanks for the replies- not sure what I expected when I didn't think to expect it. I seem to remember Jim Beard from ASP mentioning that G&H was better fresh- hence my practice of "quick" rotation.
Also, somewhat interestingly, there does appear to be some mild bacterial growth (not plume, not mold, not sugar crystals) on the leaf in question, which reminds me of same on Stonehaven that I've had over the years.

Note to self: don't lose stuff.

Most blends change with age. Like you, I don't buy with the intention of aging. Often, I buy more of something that I'm concerned will disappear without warning. Any aging is a consequence of my not getting around to smoking it, and my usage having cut back considerably in the past several years.

Most toppings do tend to fade a bit, and some a lot, depending on the manufacturer.

I have a jar that is about four years old. I haven't had a bowl in a few months as it isn't exactly a summer smoke. But last time I smoked it the topping was still there. I always find that the topping burns away after the first quarter anyway. Then you get to the dark fired goodness, best thing about CCP.

For anyone coming along with the same question- I just haven't had a chance to smoke it to know if it was like-for-like. The issue for me was that the aroma wasn't the same- not even close, hence my question.

Who can get mad at having some old tobacco to smoke?

I’m burning through a ton of 2013 1792 I was graciously given. It’s taking a while because it’s just not good.
There’s a ghost of what were very good base tobaccos, but my experience is becoming this: the more heavy the sauce, the worse effect age has on the base tobaccos.
It wouldn’t be bad if the flavor of the casing/topping went away, but it takes the goodness of the tobaccos with it. Fresher stuff I can really enjoy the flavors of the tobaccos even through the sauce is strong too.
I don’t find the same with the less sauced twists and flakes though, but my experience (and palate) is limited.
