There's this weird balance thing when it comes to sandblasts. Too deep and profile lines are lost; too shallow and there's no drama.

Once in a while a piece of wood would react to being blasted as if it was aware of that balance.

I'd guess it occurred about as often as a straight grain happening by chance (meaning in a mass production situation, not "cutting & shaping to the grain" artisan-style.)

Anyway, the combination of the "depth of cut" and "retained shape" here is as close to perfect as I've ever seen.

That it climbed out of the rubble of WWII London---1946 pipes are rare---makes the convergence even sweeter.

George I know how much you hate 59s. Maybe you should deaccession that pipe, if only for your peace of mind. If you need someone to take it off your hands iknowaguy as we say in the Garden State.

Nothing like those older shell blasts. I have one from the early 30’s that is one of my favorite pieces.

Well now...

This is a pipe board, and posting two casual (and partial!) photos of a pipe like THAT one ---and then "walking away" (so to speak) --- is a very serious offense.

You will recieve only this one warning: A full set of full shots of that pipe must be posted within a week, or Mr. Embers will be told that you are following him.

Also, this fella has been notified of your pipecrime, is headed your way, and is awaiting further instructions.

Haha fair enough. Here you go, its a 1932 double patent.

I have a 1943 as well, but the blast is not near as uniform as it is on your 46 and the stem needs some attention near the bit.

1946 Dunhill 35/1 Shell. It’s got some nice grain in spots. The radii of the burl originates at 10 o’clock position and goes through the 4 o’clock position.

The joinery is interesting on the shank/stem. I’ve seen similar before, and the speculation was that this was possibly done at the factory due to wartime shortages. I always figured it might be a unique repair job..,

Almost certainly a repair.

The threaded portion was probably screwed-n-glued into the stem face originally, but the glue didn't hold when the "stuck-ness factor" of the tenon in the shank got past a certain point.

No worries though if it's been working for you. Before push tenons most pipes were threaded. The smoke certainly doesn't care. lol

That's a real beauty George! I'm a sucker for the sandblasts........... so much so that I've sold most of my smooth Dunhills off over the last few years. The #59 is to me, the iconic billiard...........

Alaskanpiper- That one is gorgeous........ I couldn't have passed that one up either!

I'll play along. Here's an old SURVIVOR. I haven't cleaned it up or smoked it, I thinks she's tired, as she'll hit the 100 year mark next year. Obviously loved by the previous owner. I'd imagine this one was a great smoker, as it was repaired long ago. Probably by a thrifty working man. I wish pipes could tell stories, I'd love to hear her tale......................IMG_8997.JPGIMG_8998.JPGIMG_8999.JPGIMG_9000.JPGIMG_9002.JPGIMG_9007.JPG

My dad's ghost is doubtless pissed that I has to look that word up.

As for doing it, as we used to say in the Corps: "Not no but HELL no!" puffy

Oh, my...

You know that an intact nomenclature panel leaves a narrow and winding---but navigable---path to a glorious place, right?
