Not that many pipe smokers in Montreal, and no pipe clubs, a lot of potheads though. I managed to introduce four people to pipe smoking and they are still sticking to it. As for smoking in public, I usually do it at break time sometimes in the company of those people I mentioned. As for people staring at me, women in general smile and men leave me alone because of my body language.
This is why we can’t have nice things, ha ha! Open a pipe lounge and guys show up to smoke Escudo and kick ass.

I had a friendly encounter with a pipe smoker in the wild this morning. Before work this morning mrslax and I took a walk through the park. There was a homeless looking guy happily puffing a briar pipe on a park bench. He was receptive to my complement and we talked pipes for a few minutes before we moved along.
I'm out representin' the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City every chance I get! I even usually suffer aromatics to please the people!

I split my time between the UK and France.
In France I live in a village of less than a 1000 and there are two pipe smokers. Both are single blend smokers and oddly both the same blend.
In the UK I live in a town of over 100 000 and I've seen two pipe smokers in the last year, ones an old boy the other a young fella that marches around the locally area smoking a pete with a very fancy silver wind cap looking mighty proud of himself.

I think for most younger people they shy away from publically flaunting their pipe habit because it can sometimes feel like trying to appear older or more mature than you are. Like a 15 year old wearing a loosely fitted suit.
Over the last couple of weeks I've seen two people smoking pipes in public. One guy was in Alicante, Spain, and the other was in Madrid.
About 10 years ago, when I first picked up a pipe, I saw an older man smoking a pipe outside of a breakfast joint. Other than that, I have only seen other pipe smokers at pipe club or pipe shows.
Yesterday, I had an unexpected visitor to my garage / smoking lounge. I threw a piece of wood at the cat, to chase it away.

The older I get, the better old fashioned looks.
The last time I smoked openly in a very public setting was on a subway train platform in NYC in 1986 / 87 or so. A lady standing nearby gave me a startled , almost frightened look.
I only smoke outdoors, so I'm always smoking in public. When I walked to the post office or Trader Joes I'd be enjoying a bowl. When I walked to work I'd be enjoying a bowl. Sometimes people would honk their horns and give me a thumbs up while I was crossing an intersection. and apparently I'm known in my neighborhood as "the guy with a pipe".
I've only once has a really negative reaction, and that was when I was sitting at a table outside the Sherman Oaks Galleria in a smoking area.
A guy came up to me and started giving me grief about my filthy habit, to which I pointed at the "SMOKING AREA" sign directly behind me without missing a puff. This enraged the poor soul even further and he sprinted over to where a couple of security guards were standing and began a very nice harangue while jabbing his finger in my direction. I gave the guards a nod and waved at them while releasing a nice puff of smoke.
They listened to the guy scream for about another minute before they grabbed hm by his armpits and "escorted" him off of the property.
Other than the occasional old biddy making a coughing noise, maybe once every few years, no issues.

I've run into exactly one pipe smoker out in the wild and it was just a few weeks ago. I made sure to approach him and let him know it was a welcome sight. It was at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, he was an older gentleman smoking Orlik. We had a nice chat and I invited him to these forums. Don't know if he has signed up yet, but I hope so!
I saw about 15 chaps smoking pipes in London.... at the pipe club meeting 4-5 years ago.
A visit to one of three tobacconists here usually yields one or two each time. But, yes, it's rarer and rarer.
